All that and more. But the real question here is "why do we have Streak missiles"?

Why can't I have a laser that never misses? Or should I say a laser that doesn't fire if it's not a hit? They're much better for that kind of thing, aren't they? Speed of light as muzzle velocity, remember? Why not have a rangefinder function on it so the laser doesn't fire if the target isn't there?

Well the answer here is that a missile is capable of somewhat modifying it's flight path while in flight so even if the initial tragectory is off it can correct. A laser needs a perfect initial tragectory, which in the case of a giant 7 ton laser, is probably impossible with the pilot being involved. It's not like you can mount an AC20 on a self-actuating turret, at least not on an 80 ton mech. I could understand this being an option with smaller, lighter weapons ... like machine guns and small lasers, but the larger weapons are just too large to be moved around and computer controlled.

But the launcher doesn't fire if it's not a hit... That would suggest something else than in-flight course correction.

There is first the target is identified and that information is loaded into the missiles guidance system if the information is loaded correctly the systems is activated and the missile is fired and trackss the target .If the system fails to achive a target lock the system does not activate and the missile does not launch

I still think it would be possible and even common with "Streak" lasers. Just make sure the laser's rangefinder shows about the same range to the target as your targeting system does. Too large difference, no firing.

I concur. AC's, even if they're guided shells (Like the Precision AC shells) there's no telling beforehand if they're going to hit or miss. Missiles can be fast and maneuverable enough. Lasers and PPCs should then definitely be compatible. If you can figure out that your slow missile can make it at a weird trajectory, you can definitely figure out if a light-speed weapon's going to hit.

So, how to balance that:
Same damage, range and heat.
If the to-hit roll succeeds, resolve damage and heat per normal.
If the to-hit roll fails, do not add the heat for that weapon during the Heat Phase.
Weight: twice as much.

So, is a 14 ton Streak PPC worth it?
Or is it better to have two standard PPCs?

Paul
