Just a little idea I came up with, with props to Chihawk for working with me on it. *raises glass to the barkeep*
Heat Conductive Armor:
In the world of Battlemechs the worst enemy is not always the opposing force, but heat. Heat can cause even the most powerful Battlemechs to shut down if the pilot is not watching the meters close enough.
TDT, leaders in defensive technologies, came out with another masterpiece in the Heat Conductive Armor.
Using specially designed layerings and special tubes that run throughout the entire 'mech the armor dissapaits heat on its own, on top of any heat sinks the 'mech is mounting. Testers boast that the specialized armor allowed them to fire a large laser with a minimal heat spike.
Due to the design of the armor a few minor setbacks have been discovered. The first problem is for the same weight less armor is mounted. Though the tubes are small, there are enough of them to lower the amount of dedicated armor material. The second, and more interesting problem, is the armor's reaction to external heat sources. When tested the Flamer and Inferno SRMs's amount of heat actually affected the 'mech nearly doubled. Testing also found that exposure to fires would produce the same effects.
Rules:
In construction the HC Armor will only allow for 6 pts of armor per the 1/2 ton, and 12 pts per ton. It takes up no extra critical spaces.
Every turn the HC armor dissapaits 8 pts of heat (this is calculated as there are 8 main body sections CT,LT,RT,LA,RA,LL,RL and the Rear section counted as one). Due to the construction type a breech in any one location will not shut down the heat sink function.
If a locations armor is completely destroyed, or if the section (arm, leg, torso, etc.) is destroyed, the 'mech loses it heat sink for that location. So if the LA is blow off, the mech loses the LA's -1 heat point.
When standing in water the 'mech gets an additional -1 per leg (-2 total) for L1 water, and a -6 (total) when in L2 water or deeper.
Heat weapons:
Inferno SRMs will do an additional +2 heat, per missle, per turn. Flamers will do +2 heat on top of the 2 damage or +2 heat that the players decide on.
Standing/moving through in Fire will totally negate the -8 bonus and all heat will be calculated as normal. If the heat from the fire itself rises above 8, add that to the heat number.
Night Combat: No modifiers for night combat.
Okay, there it is...VOTE!!!

I voted: good.
Oh, you're looking for more content then that?
You might want to add something about mechs with this armor having peculiar heat signatures. It would not effect gameplay but it would be ok for fluff.

What? Something like...
"Technicians noted while veiwing with IR equipment that when the weapons fire the armor creates an interesting light show based on where the heat is being dissapaited. One extreame case of a PPC being fired made the armor ripple like a pond when a rock has been thrown in. Though modern day equipment will not be affected by this, it is sure a pilot facing one of these specially armoed 'mechs would be fascinated with the way the armor reacts to a volley of missles being launched. The result would be a mix of total confusion and the tendency to shoot at, as one tester put it 'The big bright shiny hting!'"
That good?

I like it. I was also thinking something along the lines of the Clan JF mech that had the laser heat sinks. maybe give the armor a ripple effect:
Opposing mechwarriors were at first terrified of the *insert mech name*. The heat shimmer around the armor created ripples which made MechWarriors think that some new advanced technology was being used. Also because the heat signiture was spherical rather then in the shape of the armor, it was thought that House *whatever* had developed some sort of shield technology. ALthough this has later been disproved, that initial exposure to new warriors can be disconcerting.

This armor is the combined effort of over 300 techs and 5 years of work. We at TDT are proud of our accomplishments and seek to further not only war but also civilian technologies.
we believe that this material will find uses in medical and shipping quarters. some possible medical applications are tables, and specimin containors. obvious transporting advantages, will allow cheeper and enviromentally safe shipping units. further orbital cargo containors will requirer less shielding for cooling porposes.
at present our production plant is producing over a 1000 tons of finished materials a month. projections show this to increase to 1000 tons per week within the next quarter. this will provide more then 30,000 jobs, to the local systems.
we also plan the construction of 4 additional facilities in varried locations thruout the innersphere. our largest facility is planned within the boarders of the draconis combine. this facility alone will provide jobs to over 200,000 people.
for those out there that distain our factories do to the possible increase of polutints and use of natural fuels. our factories are designed using the latest in production technologies. these will reduce polutints to less then 2 percent. those items that cannot be used will be shipped to our waste dispossale unit, in the astaroids of the k531 system.
as for the use of natural fuels, we have planned for heavy use of fussion technologies to heat our furnaces and power our plants. providing a near limitless clean power source.
so as you can see, we have reduced our ecological impact, increased our economic influence, help to decrease unemployment, and to provide new technologies to those who need them most.
well this concludes this press confrince, and please direct all questions to my vice-president. again i thank you, and good day.

What I'm thinking is that if the armor were to result in an odd IR signature, then woudln't using the armor at night or in other situations when IR is commonly used cancel out any bonuses that would be gained by the cover?
(Imagine looking at nothing but darkness when all the sudden, you see an Efreeti lunge at you.)

Yeah, except the rules governing IR signatures and night combat are pretty crappy IMO. If IR signatures were so relevant in Btech than there would be no need for the night modifier to-hit.
Mostly the IR sig. thing can be used in RPing. A player could look through an IR scope and realize that a mech has such armor, and then say to his infantry group "break out the infernos."

Vagabond: My TDT is Thirdwave Defense Technologies...if I took your TDT, I am sorry...
As for fluffy....mmm....I will work on it.
As for night rules. FASA has changed minds about IR rules and night combat so much that I dont like it!

No sir, I don't like it.
I do like that you are thinking about new stuff, but I dislike both the additional heat dissapation and the low number armor points per ton.

Which additional heat dissapation? The whole idea or in the water?
And the low number of points is cause there is actually less armor there per ton...

you might add into the fluff:
"the cooling tube embedded in the armor prevent breaches from draining all the fliud out of the system with thousands of microvalves. It was discovered that without this feature the first few heavy hits would drain the system of its fluid rendering it useless."
How about allowing a version that takes up space like ferro armor, but having regular armor protection. (16pts/ton and 7 spaces taken)? 4 double heat sinks would be taking up 12 spaces, but this would take up 7 spaces for the same benefit. It seems like a lot of surface area covered for only 8 points of heat dissipation, but maybe it would make a middle alternative to Double Heat sinks?

It's 14 critical spaces for IS endo. 7 is for Clan. But I get your point; it should be bulkier for what it does.

14 Spaces for Ferro is utter crap. I hate that rule beyond what i hate most crappy rules.
I like the idea of 7 or 8 blocks (maybe one per section like the Null-sig), and the fluff idea about microvalves...

Cool stuff. I like it.
Here's a nasty thought. What if you stick this stuff on a DropShip? Or WarShip?
