Here is a quick backgrounder:

I have been asked to be a baron in a medieval theme paintball big game this summer. The storyline is the king has died and two barons are fighting for the crown. There will objectives and positions to seize and hold which will result in points. Once enough points are acquired, either baron can lead his troops against the castle (a 40ft x 40ft fort). The time period is circa 1100AD.

My query is this: What would a baron in this times where? The required kit I must wear is a mask and a harness with pods. After that I am open to suggestions. Within reason, I would like to look the part, so ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

A big sword and probably a shield.. There were not many paintball guns back then...

But to be honest, I'd look at a medieval site on the net and grab any Nobleman's vest, trousers, and maybe hat. Be careful though, some of them are heavier fabric and will be very hot.

For cheaper you could use a long sleeve tunic (the middle ages version of the t-shirt) and pants. For paintball though a renaissance baron battle would fit more. Europe did not have handheld firearms until the 15th to 16th centuries at the earliest. (cannot remember the exact year)

There is a definite issue of projectile launching gear (paintball markers) when playing a medieval scenario, but we tend to over look that as soon as the contact occurs. As for weight, I used to drill and parade in heavy Boer War wool uniforms (regimental requirement) so I quickly learned how to handle excessive heat and weight. Ahh, the memories of baking in the confines of an APC in 38+ degree weather (celsius).

Thanks for the info. I will see what the costumes stores have here. I will be bringing my own sword and shield to this event as props and lunchtime demonstrations.

Another thing...even in the 12th century, the clothes nobles wore were crude compared to the noble "garb" you see on TV and in movies.
Generally speaking only natural fabrics and the like( cottons mostly with some silks and furs throwen in.) A relative hodge-podge of fabric.

I think the easiest would be:
A sleeveless Overtunic with a belt. (A Length of fabric with a hole for the head.)

Sword and shield. (Remember you'll be running, jumping and dodging..)

Spurs if you could find them. (You could wear them on your belt.)

Teammates should be in the same color scheme as you choose for yourself. (If they are members of your household they will wear your colors.)

A little silver paint for metalic looking objects.

Maybe a horse or two...
Doesn't even need to be real...

Great ideas guys. I willlook for the overtunics and such thisweekend. Spurs are not a problem and I already have my sword(s) and shield. As for the horses, the field owner is builting some. Real horses tend to bolt after getting hit with paintballs.

My guard will be dressed in the same colors, but the 50 odd other teammates will not. I will have red vests for them to wear, so hopefully that will reduce the number of players being taken out by "friendly" fire.

I hate friendly fire. Nothing worse than almost claiming the objective and then being killed by one of your own people.

It is when you have that nervous newbie with you who is experiencing his/her first Big Gmae and ends tagging along with you. I have been shot, tagged and "lit up" by one of these players on numerous occasions. The best, and it is hard not to laugh, is when you reach an objective, tell them to wait and secure the spot while you scout ahead. Before leaving you tell them how far you are going and the direction in which you will leave and return. Without fail, as soon as I return I get hit even with yelling that I am on their team as I approach the recently secured objective. The freaked look on their faces and the apologies that follow me as I head to the "deadbox" usaully results in laughter. Who needs spies and assassins when you have your own teammates to do the job.

The few times I have played I always liked the last free for all, us the rest of your paint battles. It is much easier to play when anything that moves is a target.

When I started doing this kind of stuff, there wasn't paintballs. We use BB Guns...

Hell, that was stupid... Fun, but very stupid...

I started sword fighting as a child using sticks. Now that was painful. Ever been smashed in the hand with a quarterstaff?

We used metal posts from a chain link fence. And there's fewer greater feelings in the world than shooting your ex hard with a paintball gun. Especially when she decides to play against you so she could shoot you.
