I laughed my ass off when I read that.

And only last weekend did I attend voluntary reservist training here. We took some 150 men to the firing range and went through ~5,000 shots of 7.62x39. Not a single accident.
Volunteers have better motivation, methinks.
It's the bored professionals who are dangerous for themselves and others.

*laughs and shakes head*
I think that more painful than shooting yourself is the humilliation and embarrasment of looking like a complete klutz in front of your bosses.
Anyway, it was a good object lesson, I bet he has saved lives as those kids know now what happens when you fool around with a gun.
*scratches head*
How it could happen?
I think he carried the gun with a bullet in the chamber *frowns* I am never comfortable with that, despite all the safeties , there are always accident.
Anyway, I think the fool was not paying attention, and when he pulled back the slide, he didn't pull it back enough for the bullet to be ejected, he also was holding it with this hand, instead of pulling it all the back
When he let it go, the slide had travelled far enough back to action the firing pin in the forward movement.
Just my 2 bucks. The Devil loads them.

That the best kind of lesson. A Practical Object Lesson.

This is what happens when you #$%^* up! Young kids are scared away, a lot of adults avoid the "risk".
Probably a good thing, all considered... Except for the DEA guy.

Sad.
Even worse: He's not the only person to do that. (In Desert Storm an MP blew his brains out while demonstrating the safety mechanism on a .45. [It doesn't take a hero: Norman Swarzkaupf])
Rule of thumb: never showboat with a loaded weapon. Make sure its clear, and then you can show it to the audience.
I've done target practice with shotguns and a pistol for five years (off and on) and never had an accident. Neither has the club.
Our first rule: If you don't know, assume the worst.

As I understand it. The first rule they teach in most gun safety classes is: ALWAYS assume it's loaded. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

True, but I also had a firearms class where the instructor wanted to show us that a particular brand of firearm won't fire with a round chambered if the magazine is removed. He spent so much time assuring us of that, but then to prove it, he chambered a round, removed the magazine, and pointed it at the ceiling. As he pulled the trigger, his face made the "I hope this doesn't go off" look.
Fortunately, the safeties worked as advertised, but that still stuck out in my mind as a moment that could have gone tragically and needlessly wrong

It is. My teacher, Danny Goldsmith, changed it (sort of) because he wanted people to focus on the idea that even if you know the gun is loaded/unloaded you should still check everything when you use it.
Things like safeties, selector switches (which I never used an assault rifle) bolts, sights, even the target.
For example, if you yell pull and the skeet doesn't launch, automatically safe the shotgun (or take your finger off the trigger if you don't have a safety) and don't fire the gun until you know why the thing didn't launch. Same thing with a dud or misfire in the gun.

Another sad thing is how often people play with pistols, causing accidents. There's just something with having a small, handy piece of hardware at your side when you're bored. When I served as an MP (1992-1993) we weren't issued pistols because the guys in the previous contingent managed to shoot out the radio room window thrice in a week. Bored soldier, boring radio room, play with nice 9mm FN pistol. It can't be loaded, you just removed the magazine and you're not allowed to chamber a round unless there's a situation requiring it. BANG!
At least they didn't shoot anyone. There's been a few cases where MPs managed to wound or even kill someone from their own group while fooling around with the FN.

We design Mechs....
