For a light mech, this thing is sad. I can make a 95 ton Assault that moves as fast and is exponentially better at taking and dealing damage. If a fire support mech can't keep up with it's lance the lance will get over extended and die.

Well, duh! Of course a 95 ton 'mech will carry more weapons than a Panther. The problem is, I can probably put three panthers in the field for the price of that one assault 'mech. A Banshee 3S, generally considered one of the premier assault 'mechs in 3025, costs a hefty 8.8 million c-bills. By comparison, the Panther costs 2.4 million c-bills. Three Panthers will only cost me 7.2 million c-bills, and will kill a Banshee any day of the week. Remember, the Panther does not go out and provide light lances with support for the most part....they provide heavy lances with support, an impressive feat for a light 'mech. All correct thinkers cannot escape the conclusion that the Panther is simply the best

Though it is cheaper to use one mech than 3, payroll, techs, support personnel, admin, housing, part supply, training, overhead, etc...
3 mechs can be more flexible in a campaign than one. It all depends on the circumstances and background. I would take one 95 tonner up against an Atlas with a good outlook for success, while taking 3, 35 tonners against an Atlas and my outlook would be, at best, fair. For, say, escort duties, I would prefer to have the 3, 35 tonners over the one 95 tonner.

I'd take three Panthers vs. an Atlas any day of the week. With my speed and range advantage, I'd dance around at long range until his LRM-20 ammo ran out, than walk into about 12 hexes and execute the Atlas...he'd never even get an AC/20 slug off.

I've played that scenario...actually it was 2 Panthers and two Jenners...in a best of five match the Atlas came out on top 3 out of four times. The one time it lost was from a lucky crit hit in the rear CT by a Jenner.
Friend of mine was a die hard Kurita fan and swore that he could take out anything with that lance...so I tested it. He still swears that he would win but the results stand.

He should have taken you down unless you were having extroidinary luck. I find most people report luck as actual fact.

If the numbers were played, rather then dice, the Atlas would go down, to be honest, its not that good of a machine. To much short range firepower, and to slow to make a difference. In a slug match, it rocks, in a duel, it dies.

I don't know why people view the Atlas as the be-all and end-all of 3025 'mechs. It's vicious if it gets close to you, but otherwise it's not a threat. I'd much rather pilot an Imp...of course, only the Dragoons have any of them.

As for your battle Seraph, I don't see what kind of tactics those Panther pilots were using. How did the Atlas get them; I find it hard to believe it could kill two Panthers with twelve shots of LRM-20 ammo. The AC, lasers, and SRMs should never even come into play.

Never said he was a good pilot.
He would send in his Jenners to get me in close usually from a flank or behind and use his Panthers as support also to keep my attention from the Jenners. Unfortunately for him the Jenners have paper for armor and go down easy. As for the Panthers I would save my LRM til later and just take som beating until I got good initiative and then I'd charge up and lay on with weapons...heat got really rough but if I could get one of the Panthers with a good hit then I would take him down easy. After the Jenners were down I would use my LRMs on thePanthers. Got a lot of concetrated hits from them. It's not really that hard for a 3-5 behemoth to catch a 4-6-4 light mech unless the light mech is actively running from you.

You're damn right that Panther runs; run and gun, run and gun. That PPC never runs out of ammo, unlike the LRM-20.

Best would be for the Panthers to engage the Atlas over open terrain with a lot of rough hexs to slow the non-jumping Atlas down.

-Mud, that is the reason I rip out that AC/20 and replace it with a PPC and heatsinks. Oh, and I turn one og the rear firing med lasers towards the front. Constant stream of long-ranged firepower.

I wouldn't really send out a lone Atlas in the first place. While the scenario is interesting it's not very likely, is it?

That Atlas should have three lancemates to provide the long-range fire. It wasn't designed for fighting light mechs, but for assaulting fortified bases. Beat them with the LRMs until you're close enough to let them have it with the short-range guns.

I still say the only Atlas worth playing is the 7K

Thats what I call a Long Range machine. A model I made dropped the AC/20 for an AC/10 and more LRM ammo.
