Well, my favorite physical attack is kicking. Plain and simple yet frightening and deadly.

You know, now I have a mental image od an Assassin slipping in behind a Wasp and doing one of those Rambo-neck-snappie things.

Hey, I once played in a campaign where one guy had a customized Assassin. TSM, hatchet, the works. Then some Jade Falcon in a Thor shot it to pieces and the pilot got killed after ejecting. Another destroyed mech fell on him.

I don't bother with hatchets, maces or swords. They just waste weight and space you could use for a ranged weapon or heat sinks. Besides, those things make you feel you have to get close to an enemy and use that club. It's a waste of good mechs, I tell you. You'll be drawing fire like crazy while closing in, and you'll also be taking physical attacks from your target.

Your statement makes sense but doesn't match with my Btech experience. I once had a 100 tonner with TSM and 2 hatchets, before the single-hatchet rule days, that was quite devastating on the battlefield. With the TSM activated it was as fast or faster than other assault mechs on the field. It could easily catch and kill just about any assault mech (including clan mechs). The simple observation was that Btech ranged weapons don't do enough damage relative to the most amped-up physical weapons to negate the physical weapon's use.

IIRC it was a customized Firestarter, so that's a 35-tonner. Easily enough to kill a man.

Well, at least they don't suit my play style. Or my usual opponents. And as we usually stick with somewhat canon units for the battles there aren't really many hatchet-weilding mechs about. And none really optimized for hatchet use except, perhaps, the Berzerker.
I've used the Hatchetman on a few occasions, because of tables or as filler in a Lyran unit. The hatchet just wasn't as useful to me as that AC it carries. Actually, I never got to use it.
I've had an Axman in a now-defunct merc unit, and experienced the same thing. The AC/20 did more for me than the hatchet. Even if I did manage to kill a Rifleman with the hatchet once It would have died quite as much with the lasers and a kick.

I think this is something that actually may have been addressed in another thread. However, I have to disagree with this sort of customization. The myomer is an integral part of the mech's structure (which is why you cannot "crit" it). "Customizing" a mech by switching its standard myomer with TSM would not be a modification...it would be a ground-up rebuild. ...just my $0.02

Not really, the Myomer gets damaged by combat anyways, so it has to be easily replacable. They describe it very well in the first few books of the twilight of the clans series. All they do is open an access panel, disconnect the myomer and use a crane to remove it. So remove old and put in new right in a standard repair gantry.

I think your experiences with the Hatchetman and Axeman are about average; the axes on them are really not much good. The Berserker also sucks as a hatchet-bearing mech. I think there's a Liao mech that makes good use of the axe.
However, the potential of physical weapons exceeds that of ranged weapons IMO. With ranged weapons I do not believe I have ever made a design that can do more than 60 points of constant damage per turn and have the mech remain heat efficient. Even if a mech mounts 4 LRM 20's its probably going to do about 50. However, the mech I mentioned in the earlier post had a damage potential of over 110 points, all direct fire, without exceeding the heat 9 mark. I don't think you can brush off that kind of power as useless.

That was not my issue, it was the silent thing. So 1 ton of metal slamming into lets say 20 tons... real silent. Yeah not like a AC10 going off but that is like saying a car wreck is quiet compared to a howitzer going off. Yeah on is ungodly loud but the other makes a lot of racket also.
AWAD- 50 tons Battlemechs, not Anime Stealth Ballerina Uber Bots

Actually the Scarabus, I think, makes good use. Light mech with speed. I think 30 tons so 6 points full body. Not bad against another mech or the back of a big mech. To use the Hatchet, either jump 5, or a move of 6 but 7+ is needed. Then you can move in and use it. Thats way I think the Cartoooon version of the Axeman with LRMS vs AC was better. So it could do something as it got into range to bring LPL and Hatchet pain.
AWAD- LAM with Hatchet, plus TSM, talk about Munch with a capital M, fly by, punch table, Twack,

110 damage? 80 pt mace, 30 pts 2*ERPPC? That's actually quite pitiful for a 100-tonner. It means even some mediums outclass it unless it can get into physical combat range. Damage potential that requires you to stand at range one hex from the enemy isn't really worth it, IMO. Ambushing someone with it is fun, of course, but you can't get an ambush every time.
I'd rather take a Devastator than something that relies on a glorified club. Two headcapping Gauss rifles means I can start the serious killing at 22 hexes instead of 1.

If the myomer is damaged, odds are the limb has to be mostly rebuilt in any case. I would agree with the Colonel; switching myomer or any other sort of structural component on a battlemech would require an extensive overhaul. Some things, like adding endo steel or switching to an XL engine, would essentially to building an entirely new 'mech.

Compared to what? The 31 pts a Man O' War prime can do? How about the 42 of an original Atlas, or the 45 of the Masakari prime? The 54 of the Daishi Prime? Or how about the 40 of the Marauder 2?

So, it works in a group and uses cover. Individual mechs don't have to be good at everything.
