yeah, they use them for re-attaching dismembered fingers and toes. After the digit is sewn back on, the doctors attaches a leech to the tip. The leech actually promotes blood flow to the tip of the digit. After several days, they just take the leech off and everything heals just fine.

My cousin sliced her finger off accidentally when she was in high school. They put it back on and attached leeches. I saw her in the hospital with them. Kinda gross. But they also helped take the blood out of the finger as the body was pumping it into the finger but it wasn't heading the other way too well.
Now she's fine and you'd never know she lost her finger.

I find it interesting how these sorts of things come full circle.

They have been using leaches for years on severed limbs and such. They are used to jumpstart circulation when it doesn't start up on its own. Kind of like siphoning.
Maggots have been used for a couple of years. They are raised in a clean environment and are used to help clean out infected wounds and stuff. Maggots don't eat the good flesh, only the stuff that is rotten, so they are better at cleaning wounds than any surgeon could hope to be.

This actually makes good sense; doctors really do over-prescribe anti-biotics. I've even known cases of doctors using anti-biotics to fight viral diseases...you would think they'd know better.

Heck, something with a lot of teeth may provide the next breakthrough. A scientist noticed that alligators, who live in the swamp, frequently survive having limbs bitten off in fights and feeding frenzies. Given the highly toxic soup that such waters are, he is wondering why the gators didn't die of infections. He put a drop of gator blood in a sample of a bunch of misc infectious bacteria. All the bacteria were dead by the next 2 days. He is trying to isolate the agnet(s) in the blood.

My old doctor tried to get me to come in "To see what we can do for you" after I threw my back out. Needless to say after screaming at the nurse to release my chiropractor visits because I wasnt going to take painkillers for the rest of my life, I found a new doctor.
