Heya.
Just thought that I should drop THIS nasty little thing off again for Motown. Be forewarned that there's no fluff for this thing, it uses level 3 IS rules, and was built for a "Blast everybody" competition that, basicly, allowed the use of any published book for gear (Including MaxTech) to use IS *or* ClanTech, but unable to mix, money no object, and so forth.
The Vampire was one of two mechs that weren't 100 tons (The other was a 40 tonner that went out quickly).
Teh Vampire won, handily, suffering *0* hits the entire time. Not 0 losses, but 0 HITS.
It's the Ultimate Mech, the cheesiest thing imaginable, and is being re-presented here, just to show Mo that, while OD lurves the Old School, don't think that OD can't play with the boys.
No real formatting, here, since it doesn't matter.
1.5 Endo Steel
5.5 Engine (240) (8-12-12)
0.0 DHS (10/20)
3.0 Conversion Gear
1.5 Gyro XL
2.0 Small Cockpit
2.0 Armor (Laser Reflective) (Doesn't matter, tho)
4.0 Jump Jets (8)
4.0 Improved Jump Jets (4)
2.0 Mpulse - RA
2.0 Mpulse - LA
1.0 TC - H
1.5 ECM - CT
The Vampire is a LAM, which starts off in Airmech mode. This gives it a movement rate of Jumping 36, or +10 to all target numbers before attacker movement or terrain is taken into effect. Note also that a natural '12' is *not* an automatic hit. This means that a stationary mech with pulse lasers, in no terrain, can hit teh Vampire on a 12 if at short range. No other weapon should even bother rolling, because it can't hit. Note that in Airmech mode, the Vampire generates 0 Heat for moving, and, furthermore, does NOT get the usual +3 penalty for firing while jumping. And can use a small altitude boost to use the 'Shot from above' to hit chart. Fun with headshots!
The Vampire, thus, imposes a +10 penalty on attackers, jams TCs with ECM, and has laser-reflective armor to reduce damage from the only thing which can hit it (Pulse lasers) ... in return, the Vampire fires with a -3 modifier for Pulse-TC combination, modified by the foe's movement (If there was any, they can't hit with *any* weapon, even Pulse lasers) and terrain.
End result?
Teh Vampire flits away if it loses initiative, moving, oh, 20-25 hexes away behind terrain that the other Mech can't possible get an LOS to, then flits out once wins initiative and either backshots of highshots for the head while being impossible to hit.
Also note that, as a LAM, teh Airmech mode doesn't have to jump in a straight line. It can move any direction, to end up in any facing, at will.
The Vampire was made to win the thing, to show that OD can hang if needed, and as a showcase for why LAMs should never, ever, be seen in modern Battletech games.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed the ultimate mech. I know that no one that had to face it did.

Hmm, that Tactical Handbook ECM that blocks the targeting computer is really nasty in that context. Nowadays, however, you'd have to worry about one more weapon - the lowly standard AC armed with precision ammo. It reduces the target movement modifier by -2.

Hrm. That'd make a +8 penalty for a non-moving Mech, allowing it to hit on a '12'.
That wasn't around the last time.
In that situation, I guess that you'll have to stay out of firing arcs, just in case.
It's just all mean and nasty and deathmunchy. Got teh name Vampire not from our own illustrious one, but from the image I used for the thing ... had bat-styled wings, rather than more aircraft-themed, in order to scare mechpilots more. Teh Vampire was Death, and wantd you to know it.
Thank goodness this thing'll never see the light of day!

I think a machine like that justifies orbital bombardment

I have to heartily agree with you on that one. Only easy way to kill a mech like this is to melt it to slag while still in the hanger.

Fighters could deal with it on equal terms. All of those movement modifiers go bye-bye when a Corsair goes after it.

| Actually fighters would deal with it on MORE than equal terms ton for ton aerospace fighters have an edge over LAMs in all modes indeed a conventional fighter would match up well too especially in the lighter weight classes. One Reason I have done relatively little with the type.

I defeated it this weekend!!!
I used artillery. Lots of artillery. You don't target a mech, you target a hex. I had enough to saturate areas and wore him down with area effect weapons.
It was beautiful. Totally beautiful.

I have only used fighters once, so I was not even thinking about that. Now that I think about that, a cloud of those Cessnas posted about a month or two ago could take care of the Vampire. Although they would lose a number of there own.

Your foe was a tad weak.
Next time, remember that Arty is a sphere, only a hex or trhee tall. Just kick off to 4 hexes high, watch the stuff below you blow up harmlessly, and go to town.
A flyer killed by arty is like a vampire being killed by a tanning bed. I mean, it's *right* *there*! How can you *possibly* fall in?

Arty Flak, thats the way to go man. Cluster munitions set to gooff at definied heights, and you could set enough of a pattern to make flying through hard.
Although an AA Mech with Pulses and what not would'nt do too bad either.
Or here's another tactic...but needs a realistic home rule:
Every mech aims in the general "up" direction and lays down a barrage of fire like an umbrella. nothing could get through completely unscathed. I'll find the rule i wrote up for this and post it as soon as I can.

Personally I would rather just send a fighter after it. A lot easier, and no new rules.
