I just got a cool electronics catalog a few days ago. Much to my suprise they are actually selling a product that is the real life equivalent to myomer from BT.
see www.jameco.com
It is a nickel-titanium alloy. When a current is sent through the wire it shinks. I thought it was pretty cool. The only problem is, their largest wire can only lift 2kg.

Then I guess they need to make 'em bigger and more powerful.

Belive it or not, I saw something a while back about the military experimenting with 'hands free' piloting. The pilot has to manipulate a dot in his or her alpha wave. Essentially, it was a neurohelmet. And the thing worked. Now all we need is the fusion ractors that work.....

I just find it interesting how science seems to create quite a bit of what sci-fi writers theorize. How many of the new robots are being built with thought processes that Asimov created in his books 50 years ago?
I am just wondering how long it will be before someone will replace hydraulic rams with 'muscle' wires like these on robotic arms. I am sure with enough programming sophistication they could control the current to each individual strand so that it has the dextarity that the human arm has.
Oh, and don't forget that the gauss rifle actually exists. The military just has npt found a large enough power supply to run the thing. In fact the superman escape ride at universal uses the linear magnet theory to accelerate the car. I have seen college research that uses a series of magnets that throw steel bbs fast enough to turn a concrete block to powder. Only problem is, it takes the equivalent amount of power for one shot that I use in my house for a whole year.

Hmm, myomers, neurohelmets, gauss rifles, lasers, missiles....
Damn, I volunteer to be in the Mechwarrior Training Program.

I am an engineer. I am told that I am at least a decent engineer.
By far the biggest limit on what we as a people can do is the limit of ideas.
I firmly believe that given enough budget, size, and power good engineers can design just about anything.
It really is amazing some of the things that are done in both the military and commercial sectors.
Heck something I designed as the lead of a three person team is now banned by international treaty.. (kind of a sad claim to fame, but it is mine!)

It really is amazing.... Not surpising, but amazing....
Half of that list is already in prototype stage or higher....

Most of the equipment in the BT universe is beyond the prototype stage. The biggest problems are in the refinement and application.
Pinhead - should we be afraid that you designed something that was made illegal but international treaty?

Banned by international treaty. Hmm, it would have to be something that is worse than a weapon of mass destruction. Im sorry, but the only thing I can think of thats -that- bad would be 'Carrot Top: The Movie.'

Enjoy...
BTW, I'm not sure it's a real gauss rifle, since it uses no electricity. Or, it might be a gauss rifle, and all the electromagnet using ones are Rail Guns.
Whats the difference betwen a Gauss Rifle, Mass Driver, and Rail Gun?

A gauss rifle and a rail gun are the same thing. Both use eletromagnets that turn on and off as the round goes down the barrel. I am not sure of the thrid one have not heard that name before.

I think that a mass driver is a variant of the gauss rifle. But then and AC could be called a mass driver too, when you get right down to it. And so could a catapult, a pistol, a rilfe, a slingshot....you get the idea.
I wonder what the ballistic profile on your standard I-beam is?

pretty poor. a small cross section, but a lot of vortex created drag.

House rules= 1/3 the range and a pilot roll due to firing a high mass.
We never settled on the size of a gauss rifle bore BIG or smallish? Big would probably allow you to fire varios bones from salvaged mechs. (a bone too damaged to repair that is)
Engineer degree dude(ette):
How much would a 5' long average sized beam weigh?
How about a chunk of railroad iron the same size?
