Soon after the beginning of the First Succession War, the Kurita high command decided to commission a protytype 'mech with similar capabilities to the Panther, but which would be lighter and cheaper to produce. The resulting machine was not intended for front line deployment, but instead to serve in militia and garrison units defending the Combine's cities, or other static installations. Although limited numbers of the Zeke were produced on Luthien, Commonwealth and Federated Suns raiders destroyed most of the Zeke's production facilities before the design could be pressed into full service. The DCMS subsequently shelved the project in order to devote scarce production resources to more flexible 'mech designs. Of the fifty produced, only a single Zeke is known to remain operational, with the Legion of Vega.

WAY to slow a 20 ton mech with a 4/6/4/ move is a walking coffin a 20 ton mech cannot carry enough armour to fight the type of static warfare this mechs slow speed would dictate

The design was really intended for formation use in cities, as a sort of cheap alternative to the Urbanmech. Kurita has some of the same notions about honor as the Clans, so think of this as a second-line machine, issued to the lowest of the low. It is definitely a suicide machine, but within the DCMS, death is lighter than a feather, and duty heavier than a mountain. Of course, that other adage soon came into play as well "Human life is cheap; Battlemechs are expensive," and Kurita was forced to concentrate on more survivable 'mechs like the Panther (note that it ends up with the Legion of Vega; there used to be a full company of these with the Legion, but they keep getting killed off for some reason).
