They'rwe always finding something to keep you scared. That way you don't think and go the direction you are pointed like a bunch of cattle.
Most of the diseases that appear after 40 years of age, are diseases of modern living. Before we discovered sanitation and antiseptics, most people died in their 30's. Long before this cancer, heart and alzheimer's stuff ever kicked in. Heck by the time you have fathered 2 or more kids, evolution/ mother nature is done with you.
Anything beyond 40 is simply gravy, why sweat the small stuff? The Flu killed more people than SARS ever dreamed of doing.

Makes me remember the episode of Penn & Teller's Bullshit on HBO I watched where they went to a tree hugger convention (sorry, I think the extremists are really freakin' annoying) and got half the people there to sign a petition to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide. It was just proof that those people will argue for anything, even when they don't know what it is or have any facts to stand behind.
(PS. If you've never watched Penn & Teller's Bullshit, I highly recommend it. It's hilarious, entertaining and, believe it or not, educational)

I have seen several T-shirts in the SCA (a mideval recreation group) that say "Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it.... Badly."
This whole dihydrogen monoxide thing was spread around about 10 years ago when the web was new. When I first saw it I laughed my ass off. Especially since most people do not get it.
As to the environmentalist stuff... A friend of mine from college has a button that says:
