|

I just got a copy of the December National Geographic, and was reading the article about aviation.
They mention a new technology in flight suits for fighter pilots being developed by a German company. It uses fluid bladders instead of air pumps to help mitigate the effects of high-G maneuvers.
Here's the interesting part:
"The liquid doubles as a survival tool, because the pilot can drink it after an ejection."
"'We know the fluid is water-based, but they won't reveal exactly what it is,' says Ripple. 'We know it's from Germany, and we know you can drink it. I'm thinkin' it's beer.'"
So, how many people want to be Lyran fighter jocks now?
I bet this will be more popular than the "elephant legs" (I think that's what they call them) that the Lyrans currently use!

It would be a stout, it's healthier for you....

mmmm stout
I know I said this in another post, but it is one of my favorites so I will say it again.
"stout - the beer that drinks like a meal"

A friend called it liquid bread.
But about the flight suit: I doubt the liquid system is going to be any more comfortable than the one already used. Well, unless you also use it for keeping the pilot at comfortable temperatures.

It is bad enough that the pilots sit in the same spot for hours on end, but the freezing at high altitudes and the boiling temps before takeoff can seriously degrade a pilots skill.

nah, its probably goldschlager...after all the pilot might be out in the wilderness for days, and you can fit more alcohol into the suit using liquor than you can with beer.

The current flight suits require the pilots to flex their muscles, especially their stomach muscles, during high-g maneuvers. This suit does not require that, or at least not as much. Not only does this save some pilot fatigue, but it also allows them to communicate while they are manuevering.
Also, these suits do not require a power source (from the aircraft) in order to function: their design requires no power supply at all.

Most aircraft that require g-suits also have pressurized cockpits, so teh pilots usually don't have to worry about getting too cold up there, especially with all the gear that they wear. Now, on the ground, all that gear can lead to some pretty high body temperatures, especially if you have to sit out on the tarmac for a while before takeoff.
