Which house has the best 'mechs? My analysis will be confined to 3025 for the most part; others I am certain will fill in later eras.
Personally I favor the Kurita compliment of 'mechs, particularly the Jenner, Panther, and Dragon/Grand Dragon. Talk about doing more with less. They also field some of the best variants. The Trebuchet-K and Hermes-K are both the most dangerous in their class (thank the Sorenson's Sabres' scenario pack for both variants). The Archer-K and Warhammer-K are good 'mechs as well.
Marik also fields some of the best designs, although they tend to run heavier; Orions, Trebuchets, and Awesomes are all solid 'mechs. The lances of Archers and Trebuchets in the Regulan Hussars sound very dangerous. I never understood how they maintained those Awesomes without a PPC factory though.
Steiner is fairly weak in my opinion. All they really have is the Zeus and the Commando, neither of which are exceptional 'mechs. They do have lots of Atlases, but the Atlas is not exactly a Steiner design. Davion is also fairly weak...come on, a House which favors the Jagermech...give me a break. True, they have the Enforcer, but it can be bested by a Panther, which is fifteen tons lighter. The Javelin is not bad either, but the Jenner is obviously superior. The Valkyrie is adequate as well, but I would rather have a Panther.
Liao stacks up pretty well with the Vindicator and the Catapult. I always got the impression the Vindicator was one of the few 'mechs deployed en masse; a battalion of Vindicators sounds pretty scary to me.

I agree and yet I don't...Generally speaking you are dead on.
However a few minor points. I personally find the Commando to be an exceptional Mech when compared to the old standard 20 ton designs, Stinger, Wasp, Locust which came with the firs three editions of the box set.
House Davion only has two unique designs, the Enforcer and Valkyrie which are both decent to good designs in their own merit. They have a preference for the Rifleman and JaggerMech but only in their correct roles as fire support and air defense. Davion up until the JaggerMech III did not use them as frontline brawlers.

I like this post. I have to agree with you on most points, but also with Jade's arguments. I do have a question. What (Is) the Victor a Davion mech?

Yeah I believe the Victor is unique to Davion. But like all mechs over time they appear in the armies of the other houses just through battlefield salvage.

I think Liao and Kurita also field considerable numbers of Victors...if I am not mistaken, the HildCo plant, which makes Victors, was originally in Capellan space. Now it is in St. Ives. There may be another Victor plant though.

The Enforcer and Rifleman I do like, the Jagermech, Commando, and Valkyrie I generally avoid. The Jagermech does not have enough armor or firepower, and the Commando's lack of jump jets severly hurts its manueverability. The Valkyrie I just find to be unfocused.

The K model of the Victor came about after the trade with Comstar if I remember correctly, how many Victors House Kurita had before that I haven't a clue.
Sortek is the only notable character that I recall piloting a Victor and he was Davion.

All of this discussion is the reason why I usually just pick 4 mechs and play. Too much fluff to think about, I prefer just to concentrate on my tactics and strategy.

I think Victor Davion did BEFORE he was given a Daishi by the Wolf Dragoons.

Incorrect...the Davion Victor plant was lost to the Kuritans (IIRC), and St. Ives had the only other factory at the time of the 3050 TRO...that TRO (IIRC) made a point of mentioning that the 'Mech Prince Victor was to pilot (a Victor) was no longer produced in the FedCom...

Victor Steiner-Davion piloted one during the Clan Invasion, prior to getting the Prometheus, and Lori Kalmar-Carlyle of the Grey Death Legion also piloted one before she was killed...
IIRC, Patrick Kell was also killed in one...so that's two Steiner-affiliated characters, and 2 Davion affiliated characters that piloted them in the novels...

Since I really care only about old school, then Kurita. Liao has the Vindy which is a badger of a mech. But that is what was lost a little with the new tech and books, mechs associated with a House. Yes salvage and mercs would move stuff around but it did not seem the same, any mech was any where. Maybe because they was reems of new mechs the house specific mechs got lost in the onslaught. In the new books, I lean towards Davion and Steiner. Not as familiar but know them.
AWAD- I hate when I see games when players say they are Kuritan, and thier force does not reflect at all, Kuritan in name only

Kurita players really ought to be deploying mostly Dragons, Jenners, and Panthers, en masse. You could probably throw in some Locusts and Stingers in the recon lances, and maybe a few other types of medium 'mechs. Other heavies and assaults will be a big no-no in most Kurita regiments. If I remember aright, the all of the other heavy 'mechs were being pulled out of the line regiments in favor of the Dragon; I figure they were either stockpiled or sent to a few elite regiments. It makes sense really; Kurita's industrial base is not too good, so they might as well only produce parts for a limited number of 'mechs. That mix will serve you well in most situations too. Takashi Kurita was pretty paranoid too, so it makes sense he'd want to keep all of the heavy and assault 'mechs under his direct control.

it was originally; Kurita did not capture Davion's Victor plant until either the Fourth War or 3039. I think they nabbed a Wolverine line at the same time.
