Thank you for the tips, as I mentioned before I purchased the "revised" box set, and I have ordered the Master Rules (Revised) for Xmas. Any other literature you recommend?
also just so I start on the same page, what level is mostly used for gaming?
You might think these are foolish questions, but remember am sort of a rookie, and I have more than 10 years of catching up to do.
Hope to put a PPC up your flamer soon, you Liao dog...

Good lad. That'll bring you up to speed on the game quite a bit.

Good lordy, where to start?
I'm mostly in it for the fluff (although I love the game too) so I'd recommend the various TRO's to you, as well as the Field Manual series of books. Chok full of goodies. Try to get FM:Updates first. It's not as detailed as one of the individual FM's, but it brings you up to speed to 3067 and tells you a bit about everything.
If you're interested in the RPG, make sure you get the CBT:RPG book and the Companion. Both are quite sizable, but between the two you ought to have a very solid base for participating or GMing the game.
That covers some of the more recent books. My other answer could be 'all of em!' but that doesn't help you any. Peruse Mordel's Products section, it's pretty elaborate and gives you a good idea of whats out there.
Tell me some more about what you like, and I'll have an easier time emitting something useful.

Depends on the crowd.
Level 1 (AKA 3025) style games tend to be popular with almost every player.
Level 2 games are pretty common too, with players focussing either on IS or Clan only games. Mixed games appear rare, probably because they're tricky to balance even with BV.
A whole lot of people tend to play based on their preferred faction.
Level 3 type games occur as well, but not as regularly, from what I can tell.

Newbies are fun. And crunchy. You guys make great foot actuator lube.
IOW, don't sweat it. We've all been there. If anyone claims otherwise they're kidding themselves.

Is that some type of abortive intimidation activity I'm detecting there?
Let's match that up. Firehammer vs Dragonhammer?
Hmm, nevermind, you might have an advantage there.
How about the Liao Marauder vs a standard Marauder? You Kuritan afterbirths clearly lacked the ability to make your own Marauder.
Or how about a Liao Marauder vs a Kuritan Warhammer?
That seems like an interesting match.
Ah, who am I kidding. Like I have the time these days to put my money where my mouth is.

Welcome to the family. I can understand where you come from. Just recently played my first game in almost 6 years about a month ago. Then my opponent's wife had a baby, so now he does not have the time anymore. It hurts to finally find someone to beat up on, only to lose them to other obligations.

I think it would depend on the enviorement. If he uses the Marauder he posted, I think I would have a good chance to defeat him in a city map with a Stock Warhammer.
I don't want to be pretentious, but with PPC and AC/5 as his main weapons I could get inside his minimum range and get real close and personal with SRM6, ML, and SL.
If its an open field, I could definetely get in trouble, his Marauder would not run into heat problems as the Warhammer would. _________________ Anata no gosenzo sama ni kao o awase rare masuka! - (Get ready to meet your ashamed ancestors!)

All of this trashtalking is getting my blood up...I'm definitely going to have to teach you freebirth scum a lession in the fine art of the application of battletechnology to an opponent's body. Summoner's are, of course, my personal favorite for killing freebirth scum, but I can run Inner Sphere machine's with the best of 'em. Personally though, I love taking on hordes of level one tech 'mechs with Clan tech. I usually find a balance of about 2 or 2.5 tons of level one 'mechs for each ton of clantech tends to be about even. It adds a whole new dimension to the game; which is better, quality or quantity? You need big maps though, as the Clans depend on mobility. On a two mapsheet battlefield, even two clan 'mechs taking on 6 Inner Sphere 'mechs can find themselves without enough room to maneuver. Four sheets tends to work well though.

For a clanner trash you sure talk with a lot of contractions, you must be freebirth bondsman as no trueborn with any sense of honor would dare talk like that in public. _________________ Anata no gosenzo sama ni kao o awase rare masuka! - (Get ready to meet your ashamed ancestors!)

I like this guy.
Sir Henry! Only game I run on is the Battleltech Maximus.. Used to take a stock Spider in that one...
The other PBEM games I usually take a barely moving pill box, with alot of thump, and watch as people run directly down my guns and die at my feet.
Heck, last game once we got to the last three, I offered to let someone live to the top two if he just let myself and Charger beat on each other a bit. He accepted, but Charger for some reason decided to kill him for not helping her ... Allowing me 2 free turns of unmolested fire at her. By the way, when that last game ended, I believe that I had no internal structure damaged.
Can't we all just get along?

you have all been very helpful, for which I thank you very much. I can't wait to start mixing it up with all of you. Specially Paul with his Marauder vs Warhammer challenge.
My question now is on the mechanics of PBEM, can anyone point me to the rules, process, etc... _________________ Anata no gosenzo sama ni kao o awase rare masuka! - (Get ready to meet your ashamed ancestors!)

Ahhhh! You refer to my masterful work of using the trees to select who could and could not see me? The fun part of that game was I fired every single turn, and did a rather decent amount of damage. Heck I took a -100 on my score every single turn because Chihawk's rules irritated me , and I still ended that board with the high score.
I truly believe though that I won that battle during the mech selection phase. I couldn't understand why that mech I picked wasn't one of the ones that ended up getting ruled out. It was a brute.

I'm beginning to wonder whether I ought to regret that challenger.
I'll reply to your email later. Odds are pretty high I won't have time this weekend (pesky deadlines and LotR movies) but your enthousiasm has motivated me to put my back in to getting this together.
Plus I couldn't live down the shame of giving you that much lip and then never showing for the fight.
Well, I'm sure my ego will block out the event eventually, but still.

Also eyeball that board. Lots of information about how Chihawk runs his show. A lot of people around here tend to emulate his rules (either because they think they rule, or because they developed them independent of his nefarious influences. GMTA, right?)
Regardlessly, you'll get a decently sized clue. Always nice to have some of those in supply. =)

I know for a fact that I've lost many a game in the Mech selection phase. My selections so far have pretty much all been rather moronic. I've gotten beyond the point where I can blame my idiocy on being inexperienced in chihawk's PBEMs, I suppose I'm now forced to accept that I suck. =)
Still, the election of the Locust 5M in the Race was pretty solid; it got disqualified cause 2 or 3 others picked it. The Lightray I think was pretty good to, a second one of those on the field. Of course, the saying, '100,000 lemmings can't be wrong' holds true.
I suppose that's not fair. I can vouch for my own cluelessness, but to assume others suffer equally is a bit arrogant. =)
