I mentioned in another post that I love a plan and when it works it is even better. But one important element to a plan is knowing when to move into position and when to go for the shots. So who has the discipline to hold and who does not? I know Mordel does not, he took 10s at my back and not 7s to hit Chihawk with my additional firepower.

I use that weakness of many players against them. They will always go the shot, even if it is 10s. You can easily get sucked into a fight you do not want or pulled out of position. People have been stunned I can play 2 hours and only take some pot shots, I am playing for the win, not to kill my opponenant.

AWAD- Many times I have won best player at conventions, and did the least damage or lost all my mechs but lancemates wipe the board with them.

I usually go with the best shot. The sooner I remove a threat the better....

I view my own survival as more important than anything else. After all, chances are if you get that 'mech shot out from under you, you're going to be sent off to the infantry.

I know it's weak, but it depends.

A good philosophy I try to maintain is to concentrate fire. Have my whole unit whale away at the same target, even when another may be an easier target.

If the differences are huge, I might reconsider, but the above usually works well.

Of course the enemy typically rotates their damaged units back, bringing fresh units to the fore, but at least I deny some firepower.

This way, I'm more likely to actually destroy weaponry or Mechs, as opposed to chizzeling away on every unit at roughly the same speed. That's an approach to take with the Clans, when your firepower is high, or in an assault unit, when you can expect to last till that turn when the enemy looses 4 units in 1 turn due to attrition.

Since I prefer mobility, I tend to maneuver to keep pressing on a single increasingly sore unit. Weakest first, than the strongest.

Your example, backshots at higher to-hits is not necessarily a bad thing. After all, while combined fire on Chihawk would hurt him, getting 1 or 2 hits at 10 to-hit on your rear might destroy you outright. The potential of a higher pay-off exists. More so if you're in punch range.

Likewise, I'd be tempted to try shots @10 on a target in Partial cover vs. a target out in the open. I won't hit him as much, but when I do the potential for headhits is enormous.

As I said, it depends. I can make a case for either approach, and a lot of factors matter.

Personally I switch between the two tactics depending on the opponent or even the current situation in the game. In a recent game, due to a loss of initative I even kept my back to one of the opponents mech. Of course it did help that he only had 1 med pulse left and I was in a mech with 2 lg pulse in the right arm that was aimed at his head. he had the choice of firing at my back and dying a certain death or running away and hoping that he could pick on someone else who was in worse shape.

Well, given the choice, I run. I use light and fast 'Mechs, and it works well agaisnt anyone who's not very patient. They try and chase me, and fall right into a trap. Even if the player is patient, they get fed up sooner or later. I will hide if I can't get a favorable situation.

Assuming they're just a patient as me, it can go one of many different ways, depending on my objective. Only if it's a stand up fight will I be forced to eventually take the fight to them. If I'm looking for a certain object, I'll just rush in and dart around, taking lots of fire, but likely as not, few hits. If I need to destroy something, I'll blitz it when I get an opening, or snipe at it, as circumstances direct.

Overall though, I live by the axiom of "Runway and Live to fight another day." Most often my units are "destroyed" when I retreat them off map. Better than staying and getting killed, I figure.

When playing longer scenarios (ie several battles in a row keeping the same mechs and the like) running to save the mech works, but when you play one at a time scenarios like I usually do the object is to be the last standing. Running off the board only serves to take the mech off of the field of battle.

This is a serious weakness for Heavy and Assault units, or just about anything with less than a speed of 5/8 (in 3025). I'd say in 3050 the new definition of moderately fast moves up to 6/9, and truly fast is at least 7/11.

I usually play on an infinate board, so you literally cannot run off the board. It makes sense really; just because you move off the board doesn't mean your 'mech falls off the edge of the earth. I just randomly select another mapsheet, and keep going from there, unless of course, I am actually running away and have enough speed to pull it off.

If you are playing for the sake of playing. Play to Win the encounter, and the Objective.

If you are playing a campeign style game, where every player has only so many mechs, you MUST keep in mind your FINITE resorces. Go with the best tactical situation that will garner your team/unit the highest yield.

"Holding the Line" may work in some cases, not in others. Some missions need to be agressively persued.

The best campaign I was in involved me in a Phoenix Hawk... this was all 3025 tech as all we had was the 3025 Tech Readout and an early boxed set. So here I am, and most of my lance mates are far away waiting for me to find the enemy. And I'm meandering alone and lo and behold, there is the entire unit:

BattleMaster, Crusader, Wolverine, and Wasp

Within like 9 hexes.

My MechWarrior sends out this garbled cry for help.

They open fire.

Every shot missed.

I run like hell.

The campaign was a series of Ambush/Counter Ambush like that for a few weeks. Lots of fun. Our Warhammer/Maruader combo was a great fire support unit. It was a great game, and shortly after we got 3026 and BattleTroops and started adding infantry and tanks to our games. Overall, great times were had by all!

I'm a firm believer in changing my tactics on an irregular basis to confuse people. I do however frimly believe in massing my fire on one target when possible, and denying the enemy the terrain they want. I've got one friend who will automatically run for any Heavy Woods he can find. That's why they made Thunder munitons and the clearing hex rules.

Elementals and infantry can also have that effect. You don't want to get swarmed, don't go near my heavy woods hex...and it is mine now, cause I've got elementals there.

I believe that fast and mobile is the key to success. Keep moving, draw them out, make them waste ammo, and then BAM ambush em with something hard and heavy. I tried that one year at Total Con, but tunnels do not make good mobile locations. If I do a tunnel game again i'm taking a Maruader or a Blackhawk KU
