I got to thinking about this earlier today.

Given the range characteristics, I've noticed that the AC/2, if used, is used as a sniping/anti-aircraft weapon. This is in contrast to the other ACs, which are all frequently used as main guns.

Given the new Federated Suns alternate ammo types (mainly the armor-piercing round and the precision round), could the AC/2 now stand alone as a main gun like the other ACs?

I'd say "no"...weighs too much for any benefit you can gain by it.

IMHO both the ac/2 and ac/5 should weight as much as there light autocannon brothers. both are just to heavy to be practical as primary weapons IMHO.

I just follow the house rule of improving the AC/2 to do 3 points of damage, and the AC/5 to do 7 points , and rename them accordingly

That makes the AC/7 much more even with the Large Laser, and makes the AC/3 a useful sniper / AA weapon. But for the most part, it's a waste to mount it in a 'Mech, unless is for specialized purposes like AA or antiguerrilla, long range, high rate of fire and explosive shells, plus plenty of ammo make it useful for suppressive fire.

It's more suited for use in vehicles, in my opinion.

As a main gun, you need about 3 or 4 of them.

I'd consider using AC/2s if they weighed 2 tons instead of 6... Specialist weapon, pure and simple. No use for real men, ie those who pilot heavy mechs.

Hey, I was brought up on a diet consisting mainly of Thunderbolts, Archers, Warhammers and Marauders. Anything less was just that, LESS.

AC/2 is an absolute waste of space on a Mech, and not Mech better on a vehicle. Ultra AC/2 is actually fun, especially with my alternate rules, but not very useful. As mentioned by Nightmare dropping the weight may improve the weapon. Let’s look at 3 tons for an AC/2.

Ok has really far range, but does only 2 pts, needs ammo, ammo can explode, so would you take 3 MLs + HS or a new 3 ton Ac/2? Most would still take the MLs but this can be fun. Makes the AC/2 a viable auxiliary direct fire weapon.

Take this idea; instead of 2 PPCs you take 1 PPC and 2 AC/2. Weight is almost the same, but you actually do not need a bunch of heat sinks so the AC/2 version may work well, then have 3 MLs as short range weapons. Or suddenly the old Blackjack can actually pepper you and hurt an opponent some at range.

The new ammo would then increase the danger of an AC/2 and force people to pay attention instead of ignoring that platform. But in the end my version that allowed multiple shots per round and make it more deadly, but not over powering, and kept the weight the same.

The half weight for AC/5 is a little to powerful, so maybe 6 tons might make it more balanced.

AWAD- 2 pts in space can be nasty though

The AP ammo on the AC/2 is next to useless (1 in 36 of actually making a crit), given it's range profile precision ammo is almost redundant, and the other types are so specialized as to be innefective, so no, I don't think the AC/2 has had any improvement in utility; which is why on most every design that carries it I like to swap a LRM-10 or pair of LRM-5's in it's place.

I have made a very large number of designs mechs, vehicles, aerospace, aircraft .dropships, jumpshps, and warships, hundreds of them.I have used class 2 autocannon on exactly one of them,a 100 ton aerospace fghter that carrys ten class 2 ultra ACs it is designed to fight dropships by sitting outside the range of the dropships weapons and picking away at it .It is paired with a second fighter that uses the same airframe and carries three class 20 ultra ACs the former providing cover fire for the second.I have found no other place for them outside of this specialized mission.

AA.

they make good AA cannons.

i mount them on surface vessels to give some reach against fighters. same for drop ships. in these cases alternate ammo can be a bonus.

thou for AA i'd rather use LB 2-X's over Standard AC2's.

this is all excluding the RAC/2. thats a weapon i don't mind at all. bam bam bam!

Nightmare: REAL MEN, (Son you have SO much to learn.) I would believe that IF I FOUND any.

Tons vs. the blahs... yeah I agree it really isn't worth it.....

BUT I did put one in a lance of Locusts a while back and had Lots of fun hitting at range without getting hit back. ( Course with the speed and range/ammo in open terrain it was only fun for me... )

Well, it was inspired by the player type lists, not necessarily just my own ideas

I'll post the list or bump it if it's already on the site.

The only decent use I have found for them is for use as Infantry support weapons/field guns.
