Okay here goes. Every once in a while I will get a 404 error when Fwd and Backing on an otherwise okay website.
I will hit refresh and end up on some porn or get rich quick site, or the usual anatomy enhancement page (male or female).
What is it? My homepage wasn't changed, Java and scripting are off, antivirus is running, the firewall is up, and the cache is relatively fresh (cleared before I went to the page). Every once in a while I have to cold boot to clear it.
I do not know weather my 404 html file is local or host dependant ? That might be one thing that is messed with. Any other Ideas?

"A better mouse traps, breeds a smarter mouse'
What that means ( for the children who might not have the brain cells to figure it out) is that people find ways around the firewalls, locks, ect.. that people have in the system and design ways to beat it. Porn sites are known for finding those cracks in the system and wiggling through them.

So you have no suggestion to solve it?

404 pages are usually (I believe) sent from the host. At least I've modified my 404 error message so you don't get the generic message. However, if no file is available it may just send the 404 message to the browser, who then displays some sort of generic page. Does it happen on all pages each time you get a 404? Do you have a particular web site you can give us to try it on?

It sounds like you've got a redirect on your system. First, if you use IE, update to the latest and install all the patches. Especially if you are using version 5.
Second, search your computer for any file named host. Once you find the files right click on them or open them with wordpad. If there are IP addresses in the file defining domains that are objectionable remove them and save the file.
Norton Internet Security is relatively cheap, efficient and frequently updated. I highly recommend it. I use it myself.
Good luck.

Thanks. I do have the latest updates, I have IE 6. I did not know about the Host files, I'll check them.

Well, I found some 404 files stored in a place other than cache. They just happened to match up with the sites that keep showing up once in a while. I have deleted them and told my browser to ban those sites.
