Aside from impacting your salary, making new friends, aquiring Carpal tunnel syndrom from dice rolling, and the possibility of contracting lead poisoning that is?
For me, back in the 80's (God that was a long time ago) it rejuvinated my gaming habits and has kept me interested ever since. Even though I play rarely, I still enjoy participating in forums such as these. It's kind of always been a refuge from the daily grind being to share this very kewl game with others from around the planet.
I know and work with so many people who have no idea how enjoyable gaming is, they really have no clue at all. Best of all I can't wait to pass this stuff on to my two boys and share many many hours of fun and excitement!

Well, since I picked it up back in '88 it has been a huge absorber of spare time. Honestly, though, I've spent more time designing mechs, weapons, alternate rules, and chatting on the internet than actually playing the game. All in all the universe has been a focal point of imaginitive musings and personal interests.
Nowadays Battletech isn't a big part of my life. My stuff is all packed away, I have a full time job, no friends nearby who play wargames at all, and am sick of designing mechs. Basically the only things that keep me in the game currently are the web sites.

| I would have to agree in that I as well probably spend a lot more time talking and reading about the game than actually playing it. As well as that, a person can only design so many mechs before there's nothing left to really design unfortunately. However, I actually play more now than I did up to a couple years ago. Which is to say, very little, if not at all.

Yeah, I too spend more time thinking about and planning sessions than actually playing them.
I'd say most of my BT-related time is spent on building terrain and terrain-related materials (like buildings,etc).
One really cool side effect of BT has been as a fun thing to do with my two nephews (8 and 11 years old). They're really into it, and it means that we ALWAYS have something to do when we get together. They really help fire up the enthusiasm. You'll probably have a blast with your boys, Horhiro!!!

I use it a stress reliever. I don't play as I once did, for the same reasons stated above. The Forums Keep involved and up to date in the BT World...

Battletech is the one thing that got me interested in the whole mecha genre. Trust me, that's a huge impact in my social life.

Wow cool question! 
Seriously though I was out of BattleTech myself after 88. I'd started with BattleDroids and loved it. But I got more into playing Traveller, MSPE and AD&D until 2nd Edition killed the game for me.
I didn't get back into the game until I was stationed in San Diego. A friend of mine (Martin Overstreet) joined our group and he got me excited about the game again. For Christmas of that year my brother got me all the house books for me! I poured over them and then the bug bit me bad.
I think about then and where I am at now. I would have never dreamed of doing what I am doing now. My time is so used up and I'm stretched so thin or was, that it can be stressful on one's family life! But I've got a great wife and super kids who are behind me. I make it a point though that they aren't left behind or out. My wife is a country girl and she'd make my life miserable if'n I didn't allot my time right!

Sometimes I find it strange that I would spend so much money buying battletech books, novels and minis when I was active as a weekly player for only a few years, really. When I decided to quit working nowhere jobs and go back to college my regular btech games ended since I sold my car and moved into the campus dorms instead.
And after college I got a job where I work on Saturdays till well after dark and so never could get back to being a regular gamer. I'm in a union so changing work shifts is all about seniority and so far mine has not proven senior enough to get that saturday off for 8 years now.
These past 2 years, I have just been itching to finally get that saturday off so I can get a regular group going again, and maybe even become a commando. Reading about it in the forums just isn't enough gaming for me and Megamek doesn't quite do it for me either.
My gaming fix demands a table, minis, sodas, pizza, bad jokes, and laughing at head shots.

this game started my obsession with rpgs, mechs, and table top gaming.
i bought BT3E after playing mechwarrior on SNES. me n my friend tinkered. we played. we stopped. well he did anyway lol.
i was done for the second i created my first mech. at the time i had only the lvl1 stuff and the 16 starter mechs [plastic minitures of course.] it was a 100ton behomth that i thought was great, when compared to the others. i was so wrong. to slow, under ranged, and overheated. lol.
after that i memed the mechs looks. one day while i was scouting for new BT books, i crossed the paladium robotech book. flipped thru [at the time i had only fading memories of the toys] lookin at the mechs. of course i was like, 'HEY! WHATS THIS CRAP! THIS THINGS A STINGER!' LOL. was really funny.
but i bought the robotech book non the less. thus started my rpg life. was 14 or 15 at the time.
after robotech, i picked up starwars. then DnD 2e. never any books for dnd just played it with my new friends. watched the cartoon [truely obsessed] and started colecting the TCG. at my school we started an RPG group, and played all kinds of games. the most popular was the TCG's [magic].
around then my life style jumped up a notch. i started buying more stuff, and assembled my first computer. 486 25mhz with 32 mb ram. when pentiums where the thing, p1 100 lol. shortly after i upgraded to a amd k6 233mhz and gained internet. [just as broadband was debuing] then i found this place. rest is history.
i found the novels about my sophmor year of HS. year or two later i found mordels. so in under 10 years i've gone from lvl1 to munchy lvl2, to fidiling with lvl3, to liking lvl2, to prefearing lvl1 with new players. my designs have jumped lite years thanks to this place and OD, Ruger, and Vampire. in my striving to get a liked design, i listened to there advises. and now i'm know as The Tinker.
now i've got not only friends but a family here. thats why i love mordels. its not just a BT Messege board, its a family.
so thats how BT changed my life, wicky ain't it.

Lets see I picked it up in '96. It really did save me actually. I was 22 at the time and I was drinking 6 nights a week (averaging 60$ bucks a night, thank god for tips!) But I started playing and found a group with some friends that had been long time players. Unfortunately I dont play nearely as often as I used to (I havent playerd in 2 years now) and with a wife and 2 kids about all I have time for is work then and some online gaming (but that is getting old). The novels help keep me into it and the occasinal painting bug grabes me I paint a bit. The big thing that keeps me into it are the novels and this site.
And when I win the lotto things will just pe EPIC!!u

But really, Btech really didn't start to have any real effect on my life, till I found this site. And meet you guys, And helped look beyond the munch power gammer. and be a player.
