As you all know, Mars is the closest distance to Earth it has been in 60,000 years, as I type I can see it from my window.
By the way, just came across this
(www.planetary.org/html/news.html
As Mars approached perihellium, the observatory of Java reported a huge outbreak of incandescent gas upon Mars at 00:02(GMT +07:00), August 27. Spectrometry indicates a mass of flaming gas, chiefly hydrogen, moving with great speed towards Earth. This jet of fire had become invisible about 00:15. Professor Lavelle compared it to a colossal puff of flame suddenly and violently squirted out of the planet.

ROFLMAO!!!
Nobody reads the classics anymore?
That my friends, is a Martian invader spaceship bound for Earth
Really. That news item it's a slightly altered rewritting of the first page of "The War of the Worlds" the classic novel by HG Wells that describes a Martian invasion of Earth around 1900.
You can read it online here

The book is also famous for being the basis of the most succesful mass psychology experiment ever. Orson Welles, the great film director, created mass panic in the US in 1938 broadcasting a dramatized reading of the book over the radio.
