Pick up the latest issue of Dragon Magazine (issue 308, the 27th anniversary issue)...they go over some of the changes to the Ranger class in the 3.5 editions due out in a few weeks...
They also go over some of the changes to the Fighter and Barbarian classes...

Why? Just because these are among the changes reported?

Hit Die now reduced to a d8 each level...
Skill Points increased to 6+Int mod per level (and likely at (6+Int Mod)x4 at first)...
Spells per day stay the same as 3.0...
Intuit Direction skill is folded into the Survival skill..
Animal Empathy has become Wild Empathy (and acts as the diplomacy skill (with animals only?) and is only available to druids and rangers)...gained at 1st level...
Knowledge (Dungeoneering) and Knowledge (geography) are class skills...
Spell list has been tweaked (ie, charm animal is first level, barkskin is improved at 2nd level, darkvision at 3rd, and animal growth is a 4th level spell)...
Favored enemy bonus is increased to +2 rather than +1, and you continue to get them as before (IOWs, 1st at 1st, then at 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th)...and the bonus improvement(s) can go to ANY of the enemies you choose, at least at 5th level...
at 2nd level, you choose a combat style...the only oneslisted so far are archery or two-weapon combat...you gain a bonus feat for one of the two...
At 3rd level, you gain endurance as a bonus feat...this feat is also improved over the original...
At 4th, you gain an animal companion, like a druid...
At 6th level, you gain an additional bonus archery or two weapon fighting feat, depending on your combat style...
at 7th level, you gain the woodland stride druid ability...
at 8th, you gain the swift tracker ability (move at normal speed while tracking for no penalty....move faster with less penalty)...
at 9th level, you gain evasion as a rogue or monk...
at 11th, you gain a third bonus feat in your combat style...
at 13th, you gain the skill of camoflage (can use the hide stkill in any natural terrain, even without cover or concealment (lesser version of the Shadowdancer's hide in plain sight ability)....
at 17th, you gain hide in plain side in natural terrain, even while being observed...

i think he ment.... used it only for ranger two-weapon only.
i have someone that made a char just for fun....
1 ranger, 1 monk, 1 wizard, 4 fighter, then swashbuckler. has like a 22 ac and stuff... just wrong.

Like Vagabond said, I was referring to those who played the 3.0 version just to get the two-weapon fighting and then moved on. I think the 3.5 version is much better.
I'm anxious to see what they did to the bard, though. That's one of my favorite classes.

I've heard the ranger, the druid and the bard have had some of the most extensive modifications done to them...with the bard's spell list being enhanced among other things...
BTW, if you love bards, and you love elves...check out the Mithral (Star) Elves introed in the new Unapproachable East sourcebook for the Forgotten Realms...bard is their favored class...

I had a 2nd edition Bard that we converted to 3rd.. and he went from a fun and very adaptable class to a putz.
I surely hope they do something for the class because it really does suck right now.. They are supposed to be a group enhancer, but even at that, they are awfully weak.

The second edition bards were too strong as spellcasters, IMO. Any competent munchkin knew they were perfect for short-term campaigns. Not as good in a fight as the warriors, not as good at thieving as the thief, but certainly a better spellcaster than the mage until levels 10 or so. I've played exactly one 2nd edition campaign that lasted longer than that.
Granted, the 3rd edition made the bard spell list a bit odd. Once everyone goes up in levels at the same rate I'd see no problem in giving the bard some offensive spells.
