I do not relish the idea of an infectious disease rampaging across the world killing people but if you listen to the media you get the idea that thats whats going on. SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) has been making headlines everyday for a while now, and has been coupled with terms like "epidemic" frequently. The impression the media gives is that this is a true epidemic that is going to cause devastation across the land. But in truth there have only been 4649 reported cases across the world (World Health Organization statistic, updated today), of which 274 have died and 2206 have recovered. This is about an 88% survival rate, hardly indicative of another AIDS disease or Bubonic plague from the renaissance days. I do think that caution is in order, but to me the whole thing seems blown out of proportion. What do you guys think?

I agree...
There is a better chance of being hit by lightning twice than there is catching this virus.

I wonder what the odds of being struck by lightning twice, then catching SARs before being struck by lightning again, while holding a winning lotto ticket and being attack by a shark are? And maybe we could throw being abducted by aliens in there somewhere.

It occurs to me that the 1918 influenza epidemic had a higher death rate. We're not much better at fighting off the flu now, than we were then.

Don't make light of getting hit by lightning more than once. just ask Lee Travino, who I believe has. Then again he's out on a flat open course in the rain holding a lightning rod more often than most people!

Actually, I was just wondering for some reason what the single longest odd event is...anyhow, I agree that the media worries more about ratings than informing the people most of the time.

Anyone see South Park yesterday? Comedy Gold.
"Stan....all of South Park is now infected with the SARS virus. Even myself....Stan, I only have a 98% chance of living. That means within one week only 98% of South Park will be left to stop the Indians, excuse me, Native Americans, from building their Superhighway through South Park to Dever.
Stan, please...go to East Park, and talk to the Vietnam Vet there to go have a vision, and find the cure for SARS. The Middle-Class White spirit is strong. *Cough Cough* Stan, you must hurry! Please!"
"Dad, I've found it! The cure! Campbell's chicken noodle soup, Dayquil, and Sprite!"
