Well they werent using rifles for fear of starting frienly fire incitents. And actually the cook said they were using stones.

Using pistols for hunting isn't that odd, there's a lot of handgun hunters in the US. Even if they usually go for bigger guns the 9mm should be sufficient. Most gazelles are quite small creatures.
Only thing to worry about is how good shots these guys are, and how good hunters. It's cruel to let animals suffer for you not getting a lethal hit. Even worse if you're not capable of searching for a wounded target in order to end it's suffering.
