|
|
I gleaned out these figures from a newspaper article:
Since WWII, two millions of Americans of Mexican origin have served in the US armed forces. Many of them were decorated in Korea and Vietnam.
I don't know if that should read of "Hispanic" origin, or if Puerto Ricans are counted aside, either way the number is big
The percentage of Hispanics in the US Army today is 7%, and it's going to rise as Rumsfeld wants to recruit more.
Of those, only 4% are officers.
In Bosnia, one third of the infantry forces were Hispanics.
In Desert Storm, there were 20,000 Hispanics.
In Vietnam, one of every four soldiers killed in combat was Hispanic.
The article point was that the US Army uses them as "cannon fodder", but I tell you, I feel pride that the descendants of the Conquistadores are living up to their heritage under the Stars and Stripes flag, and in doing so proving they are as Americans as any other.

Many people in the poorer communties view the armed services as a chance to get an education that they would not ordinarily have access to.
It is unfortunate that a large perportion of people in poorer communities are Hispanic or African American, which results in a skewing of numbers of race.
We have an all volunteer military here in the US...I'd be worried if those numbers held true if service was manditory.

Footnote:
(Reuters)
Roughly 10 percent of the 250,000 U.S. force currently in the Gulf are of Hispanic heritage.
U.S. Hispanics also were among the first servicemen captured by the Iraqi forces and among the first killed in combat. Hispanics have overtaken African-Americans as the country's largest minority group with a population of 37 million, or 13 percent overall. _________________ Memento audare semper
