Well I just re-read this series and I must Zahn is a damn good writer...
Has anyone else read this series and if so what do you folks think of it?
And if you have any other series to recommend please do so...

The only books of his that I have read were those in the Star Wars universe. I have long felt that Zahn's was a very good writter just from reading those few books.

Better than his Last Command Trilogy for Star Wars?

Yes I read it...and I could barely keep it down. I liked it a lot more than Zahn's Heir to the Empire trilogy simply because he had a lot more freedom to play with. But I still say my favorite Sci-Fi books ever are the Hand of Thrawn series.
Zahn is awesome...prolly the best writer to ever grace Star Wars.

The Conqueror series was good, but certainly not as good as his Star Wars work. The main plot elements were quite easy to guess at, even from book one.
The one thing I especially disliked was that Zahn didn`t have enough imagination to invent names. All the named Mrachani (sp?) have Finnish names, usually just their function translated directly. Very funny, ha ha. Their highest military commander is named Valloittaja, or Conquerer in Finnish. Brilliant!

Forgot to add reading suggestions.
Try Joe Haldeman`s Forever War and the later books Forever Free and Forever Peace. Interesting, at least in my opinion. I liked the first one so much after reading a library copy that I had to go out and buy it for my own.
Or if you want to go fantasy, pick up a copy of Fritz Leiber`s Lankhmar series. Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser rock!
