Can someone tell me how propulsion works in space? I've thought all about how rockets and missiles would work, but there's one thing I still don't get: how can something explode in space, with no oxygen to fuel an explosion? _________________ I have the right to remain silent. Because they carry tanks of liquid oxygen with them...

Very true, I forgot all about that. What about ballistic weapons or rockets designed to blow up stuff in space? You can't really feasibly add liquid o2 to those to make them work...

I should think that's more a case of forcive impact than explosive force. Given the high speeds, it shouldn't be necessary to add explosives to destroy things in space. Especially if you hit it head on.
If anyone know for sure though...

Chemical reactions can occur without the presence of O2. You don't need oxygen to make things explode.

If you are after ballistic missles, remember that the orbital/re-entry path is an extremely touchy area, and actually fairly predictable.
It also has a few problems in that at the very upper reaches of the atmosphere, there is enough air to cause a decent amount of friction which heats up the outside of a missle to a fairly high degree, giving you a nice clear target. The trick there is you really don't have to hit the target all that hard to knock it enough off kilter to have it burn up upon full re-entry.
The other two folks are right too.. You do not need oxygen to have an explosion/violent chemical reaction, and in many of our liquid fueled rockets, we carry liquid oxygen to help the fuel burn.
Curious, as to what you are looking for in terms of information?

Just wondering how combat in space will end up working...I know that most of today's ballistics and missiles are based off of low explosives, and I always thought o2 was required in order to complete the combustion of those explosives, with my original train of thought sort of being "well, no o2 in space, so it can't work."

Frankly, I am more interested in how the manuevering will be. Especially since we all know that there is no inertia (possible gravity when in close proximation to large stellar objects). Meaning there ain't no air brakes buddy, and if the engines fail the ship will just sail away into the endless void... until it collides with something anyway.

Same way when something explodes under water. The chemical composition of the explosive includes the oxygen necessary for its combustion, that's why some explosives (I think the majority of them other than black powder) can explode underwater or in vacuum.

Propulsion in space in Battletech is done thanks to Magneto HydroDinamics (MHD), "fusion blowtorch" engines. This has been answered in this forum a couple times before, so forgive me for not typing a complete technical explanation here.
If you are really interested in the subject, a great book I can recommend is "Spaceflight Physics for Sci-Fi writers" by Ben Bova. _________________ Memento audare semper

Ion drive is a reality. It was use to shoot a probe to an Asteroid in the Van Allen belt.

Try to play Heavy Gear 2 if you ever get a chance, it's one of the best zero-g simulators I've ever tried, and my money would be on reality matching it dime for dime as soon as our existance in space is solidified. No spaceships at all, it's all about the battle armor. It's really hard to explain, but it does an excellent job of erasing that feeling of "ground=down". Boosters on the mecha you pilot are multidirectional, and magnetic boots enable you to attach to and walk on structures. It's really kind of interesting, because half the game is on land and half is in space. A nice contrast once you try it.

Actually I have the game and I agree fully. I must say that that kind of space warfare never occured to me, but I like the idea better than fighters. Capital ships however, are just soooo plausable... heh, that would be really cool to see the attackers landing on the enemy's hull with the defenders racing out from multiple positions to defend it (and the infantry would actually die...).
