What in your opinion was the best story of the final fantasies?

I am assuming you meant American 2, right? Cause thats actually FF IV.
And for the general information...in a few months, Square is releasing FF1 and FF2 on PSX, redone to look like their SNES counterparts. That will make FF 1-2 and 4-10 available in the states, making only the incredibly rare FF 3 not available...

I assume you have beaten the game...so I want to ask you why u felt it was the best story line?
I personally thought the characters were the best, and the story had originality...but it seemed to me like the story was waaaay to linear for a Final Fantasy. Things happened one after another, not allowing for any freedom in choosing where to go next. I felt that was kind of limiting in terms of story. Where as FF8 and 9 had a lot of branching paths that would, of course, ultimatly lead to the same story segment...but felt a little more open ended...like you were calling the shots. Just my opinion. I also felt the game broke down once you got into Sin. To me it felt like it lost its cohesion...and was simply tacked on. BUT...I will say the ending was absolutely wonderful...and tear jerking. They started and finihed it nice...but to me it lacked substance all the way through.
Now...IX, on the other hand, was the best to me. Much like other FFs, the game starts off innocently enough, then takes on a overwhelmingly sinister edge as things progress. Politics, double crossing and plot twists the size of a Texas long horned cattle kept the story fresh...something the FFs had lacked. I also think the characerers were devopled wonderfully...often leaping outside of their "classes" so to speak. The best example was the hero/theif who displayed non-underworld types of compassion and companionship...and the Dragon Knight that fought on, thought she had nothing left to fight for. Small things like that kept me going in FF9...

well, truth be told..... i haven't played thru a FF game since ff3/6.
BUT i watch everyone play the others and side coach.
it may be true that FF10 was pretty straight forward story wise, but to me that story was gut renching and it drew me in. i always enjoy a good story, and i felt for my man tidus, then they rip him like that. i couldn't help but cry. it was like in FF7 when aeris died, i damn near ripped the controller out my sisters hand and threw it at the TV. i wanted to do the same thing in 10. but then they give u that goofy grin.

Ah....and a funny thing...cause I really hated Aeris...and to this day I think Sephiroth is the best villian ever. Cooler than Kefka and more demented than Kuja (FFIX). SO I cheered...heh heh.
I think u should try and grab a copy of FF9. Its so freakin cool...espicially Vivi...the 9yr old Black Mage!

Well my friend, you're one up on me. My Uncle has lived on a Golf Course for 30 years and I still can't play.... It's the damn magnetic sand traps, dragging everything around into itself.....

I enjoyed the story of FF: Movie immensely, though the movie was unpopular. Final Fantasy Tactics (not on the list ) is also a very good plot. Lots of politics with a smattering of occult monsters in that one. But still, Final Fantasy Seven is the ultimate. I liked the settting, the characters, and the battle system. (Only FFT has a Battle System on par with the Materia system in my opinion.) Final Fantasy 8 and 9 just failed to draw me in. And for this reason, I haven't bothered to pick up 10. So my list is as follows:
1) Final Fantasy VII
2) Final Fantasy Tactics: The Zodiac Brave Story
3) Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
But I must go now...he's calling me...where...are...you...Great...Sep...hiroth...reunion...

Personally, I put the game down for at least 2 or 3 weeks and couldn't go back to it, I was that attached to Aeris/Aerith's character...I did eventually go back and beat it though...something I have yet to do with 9 or 10...though that is mostly due to time, and in many ways, getting out of video games for some reason...
I also agree with another that Tactics was a jam up game...kind of (well, very) linear in that where you went was almost always laid out for you, but the story drew you in, and that final battle...YEESH, but that was GREAT! Same with 7...
Still, overall, I think 7 has had the best storyline, and the best love story, going on with it, although 9's love story is also good...I haven't played enough in 10 to know much...and FFV's and FFVI's love stories didn't hold the same grip on you as the above's did...
And FF1 was just a hack and slash game, from what I remember...not sure if I ever finished it...

I have to agree that FFT was great! It was liner but it worked well for the type of game it was. FF7 was really well done but I just got tired of the little things (chokobu breeding anyone?) that if you didnt do made the game damn near impossible to beat. That and when Aries died I had to start over and try to beat it with out her in my line up as I was relying on her to much and was totally screwed after her death.

I thought FF7 had the best storyline of the ones that I have played. I thought sephiroth was awsome, alot better than the villan in 9. The big question about Cloud was good, and Aeris' death was very unexpected. What I really never got is once the group found out Aeris had Holy and she droped it when she died, why didn't they go looking for it? The Highwind I liked too, I mean 3 forms of an already cool looking airship.
FF4 was probably my second favorite. Goes to show that even though a game may be old, it still can be good.
FF8's storyline I really didn't like, because of your enemies all the sudden become the person you are supposed to protect, and the whole Laguna/dream world I didn't like. The Ragnarok(sp?) I loved, it was just kick ass.
FF9 was alright, vivi was cool. I didn't like the story about where zidane(sp?) was from, I think it just kind of seemed slaped in for filler. The Invincible looked cool but by the time you got it, you couldn't see anything on the map.
FF10 I thought was really good. The story of sin was good, and I really like the little twist about Tidus and Zanarkand. I absolutely loved 2 things about FF10, Blitzball, and of course, they SPOKE. But I did hate 2 things about it to, The sphere grid system, and there was absolutely no traveling on the world map, like you couldn't manualy control the airship.
I haven't played any of the other FFs but FF Tactics looks really good.

The great thing about Tactics for me was that you could become any of the character classes with the characters...you could advance them as far as you liked, and then start on others (although to get some of the character classes, you had to advance sufficiently in others)...and the fact that one of the characters you could find was Cloud Strife from FF7 (and you got to meet a suspiciously familar brown haired girl who was selling flowers... )...the only problem though was that by the time you got him, you should have been around level 50, and he started at level 1...and, as said before, it was kind of linear at many points...
But the game totally rocked other than that..
Of course, any game where you can tame and take control of dragons has a tendency to be that way...
