=Overview=
The Bear is one of the most facininating weapon systems to be developed on Bryant since the Lyran Alliance invasion during the FedCom civil war. After loosing the valuable MiG conventional fighter plant, it fell on the relatively unharmed Ilyusion-LGG Manufacturing company to develop a fighter that could be used to replace MiG looses.
LGG sat down with its top engineers, and also contact the engineers over at the Dzerhezinsky Tractor Works. Working together to combine the best that the Soviet Union had to offer, the engineers developed what would become Russia's largerest cash cow: the LGG-1F Bear.
Looking for a market in which to push any new unit, to help offset the termendous costs of assembling, the engineers at LGG happened upon the MechBuster fighter. Hard to support, fixed to dangerously vulnerable airbases, and lack of production from Wakazashi Enterprises meant, that the Inner Sphere, always looking for good strong offensive units, might be interested in a new combat unit meant to compete and replace the MechBuster.
LGG feels they have succeeded, and so do others. Foreign investment in the new LGG-1F Bear is at a record setting high for the Soviet Union. Already House Marik has expressed interest in 1000 units, to be delivered in 200 unit shipments over 5 years, and the Draconis Combine has bought 100 on a trial basis. The Federated Suns are also shopping, and although no offer has been made yet, if the Draconis Combine feels satisified with the unit, it is expected that the Federated Suns will make the same purchase size they do. Even the Star League has brought its interest to bear and has made a purchase of 250 to support front line units in action against the Clans.
With so much investment, LGG has been able to build and expand the Bear line to nearly four lines, with a full three shifts a day. Most of the work is done by humans, rather then machines, and although this slows down production, teh amount of people that can be hired has kept that to a minimum. It is expected that LGG will be able to meet all orders for the Bear on time, as well as letting the lions share go to the Soviet Union Defense Force.
=Capabilities=
As an omnifighter the capabilities of the craft depend upon which configuration it is in. All configurations have some similiar capabilities: heavy armor, VSTOL ability, and plenty of pod space for weapons. The heavy armor and VSTOL are actually what distinquish this unit the most from the MechBuster fighter. Slightly slower, the Bear is able to do incredably well against any opponent in almost setting, being heavily armed, and also heavily armored. It is able to take a beating and still support or destroy its assigned objective. Its bases of operation can be swiftly changed as well, allowing for the Bear equiped unit to hit and fade, coming back again from somewhere different.
The Prime configuration is the most commonly used Bear Fighter. Mounting an AC/10, an average amount of fuel, and special armor piercing ammunition, the Bear is able to be over the field for a long time, and has a huge potential of knocking out enemy units in one hit, whether or not the shell from the Autocannon actually pierces the outer armor. The primary advantage of this unit over the MechBuster is that, even with a lighter cannon, it carries substanitally more ammunition, giving it a longer combat life. The ammunition also represents upgrades in armor piercing technology not seen at the time of the deployment of the MechBuster, allowing the Bear to get more for the buck.
The Alpha configuration is the fighter/bomber configuration of the Bear fighter. Loaded out with rockets to attack slow moving ground targets, landing zones, or instillations, the Bear is able to deliver an ammazingly large amount of fire power very quickly. However, this is a one shot deal, and once expanded, the Alpha needs to return to base for rearmament. An interesting note is that an AC/5 has been strapped under the body for a dogfighting/straffing weapon. With limited ammunition, due to its larger armor piercing nature, the Autocannon five only allows the Alpha to tangle with engaging units briefly before making an attempt to break through for friendly lines.
The Beta configuration remained a mystery until Russian air force units posted on New Home demonstrated their unique abilities. With 15 tons of cargo space, the Beta can haul around fuel, ammunition and spare parts for other Bear units in its ranks. This allows the Beta to mobilize and establish field bases almost anywhere for Bear units to attack from. The other use is to stuff the cargo bay full of bombs and have a real bomber strike enemy positions. The most common tactic in this case is to load up with either HE or Cluster munitions and strike front line positions over and over.
The Charlie configuration is obviously a nod to the land armies of the Soviet Union. A paratrooper plane, the units modular nature was tested to the fullest as a slight expansion of the hull was tested in order to fit in the rip chords for parachutes and seating for all the troopers that the Bear can hold. Very successful as a jump plane, LGG has now tried marketing it to the civilian market as a top of the line civilian transport. The civilian transport is stripped of omni capability, and weapons, but is a simple easy to use machine that makes a great, if slow, air transport. The most common addition is more fuel to increase distance and endurance.
The Delta Configuration was actually designed at the request of the Star League. Designed with increase fuel and medium lasers for long battlefield endurance, the Bear, in this case, is used for escort duty, as well as patrol and recon. With most of the weaponry produced at the Ivanov Special Weapons Plant, this allowed the Russian engineers to work closely with Star League engineers and learn more about laser weapon technology.
The Epsilon Configuration is the most limited, yet one of the most deadly of the Bear variants. Mounting a huge AC/20, and 6 rounds of AP ammunition, the Epsilon can't fight long, but if it hits you, you're pretty much out of commision. This unit is primarily being developed as a direct replacement for MechBuster fighters.
Finally the Zeta Configuratoin is perhaps the most powerful conventional fighter in the air. Mounting an internally loaded Arrow IV Missile Artillery system, and five missiles, the Zeta is able to fly to a fight and lob heavy artillery support faster then anyone else. Used for almost any mission imaginable, the Zeta is becoming a quiet, yet deadly addition the Soviet Air Force.
=Deployment=
Currently a number of Bear units are deployed in Wings, each with a wide variety of Bear configurations. This allows the Air Force to deploy with maximum flexability. Pilots are also seeing an increase in training in guirilla warfare tactics, teaching them how to use their planes and units in small units to hit hard, fade fast, and do maximum damage. The Air Force hopes to have a large number of Bear units deployed by mid 3072, hopefully bringing them up to pre-Lyran invasion strength.
=Variants=
Oddly enough there is one variant: the LGG-1FS Bear. It replaces the VSTOL equipment with vacuum sealing to make the Bear usable in space. This variant is extremely rare, and it is unknown what the Russians plan on doing with it, as their space assets are extremely limited, and do not include any space borne aerospace basis. However, the use of hydrogen peroxide fuel, and specially constructed cockpits allow the Bear to be used in space effectively. There are only two prototypes right now, that use an aging Leopard as their base of opperations. The MechBays were converted to cargo and maintaince bays, and a number of infantry are being trained in space marine tactics there as well.

Fluff problems...
1) Its a Soviet airplane...so it wouldnt use Greek letters for variant names.
The rest is nice, and all. Not much to say as I cant ever really tell a good design on paper.

actually I just used greek letters because everyone else does for Omnis, and Russian is derived from Greek...

Similar problems to the Condor...the armor allocations are giving HMA fits.

THATS BECAuse its not a fighter, its VSTOL. he used vehicle construction instead of aero construction.
