Actually for the Steel Panthers games (DOS)...the problems of the crashing in ME and 98 have been traced to the game having conflicts with the GeoForce video cards.

Folks who have been working on the latest set of add ons to the SP series have spent hours running the game with a lot of different video cards and they have found that GeoForce doesn't do well with the DOS end of SP. Others who have GeoForce cards, as I do, have to either play the game from a fresh boot or end up having Russian Rouellet kind of game with the GeoForce card...I have played the game on my girlfriends ME machine with a Trident Video card and have had NO problems. So in this case it's the video card.

I agree that a lot of the times it is the OS or the sound cards that are main areas of problem.

I'm hammering out the last bits of stuff to go in this thing and getting the cash together. However, I wanted to ask if DDR SDRAM is the same as SDRAM, or if they are at least compatible. The board is setup for DDR, but I can only find the regular SDRAM.

EDIT: My question has been answered. Does anyone know where I can find DDR SDRAM? I can find all types of ram but that...

Just thought I'd throw my two cents in here as well.

Last fall I rebuilt my computer with the help of a couple friends. I got an AMD 1.33GHz processor, 256 SDRAM, power supply, an ABIT motherboard, Sound Blaster Live, and a GeForce 2 Pro video card by NVidia. For about $850 including shipping for the parts. I already had all the other components, case and drives. As for CaSes, ATX are the way to go, I have no idea why you'd want anything else. It has worked great ever since I put it together. Not a single problem with any of the components to date. And I use it mostly for gaming.

Okay.. there is some misleading information in here..

If you go AMD, you will want an XP****+ processor. Get what you feel you can afford.

Abit makes good motherboards, so does Asus and Gigabyte. Are you going to overclock? (prolly not, but if so.. longer discussion, email me)

Memory. So far, everyone has been wrong about this. DDR is massively better than SDRAM. Also, if you are not going to overlcock, DDR 2100 is exactly the same as DDR 3500. You can run faster DDR memory at a slow bus speed and performance will not be effected. Also, DO NOT SKIMP on memory size. I would go with 256 as an absolute minimum, preferably 512. Single sticks are better than 2.

Hard Drive. You can get 80 gigs for about $100. 40 for about $60. Figure out from there.

Video. Do not skimp (much) here. If you like ATI, get the Radeon 8500, or (if you have the cash) Radeon 9700. Nvidia is the other big Vid card manufacturer around; their GeForce 4 series is good. Do NOT get an MX card. The GeForce 4 MX series uses an older core and performs worse than a GeForce 3.

Sound. Turtle Beach, or anything other than creative. Many motherboards come with onboard sound, which sounds good unless you are an audiophile.

If you want to go Intel, email me.. I need to look some stuff up and brush up on whats current with them. I have been building systems for hobby money for about 2 years now.. all of them AMD.
