I'll try this again since I couldn't get it right the first time...

I'm going to be running a few scenarios in upcoming conventions, and have been considering running some of them on my home-made Hex-less 3-D terrain. I wanted get people's opinions of the use of hex-less terrain:

pros of hex-less terrain:
1) more realistic movement (your turns are not restricted to intervals of 60-degrees)
2) easier and more realistic line-of-sight and partial-cover determinations (you just get your eye down there close to the map and look)

cons of hex-less terrain:
1) requires rules mods
2) a little slower, until people get used to the rules mods.

So let's hear your $0.02, everyone!

I've always preferred hexes. No playing with rulers or string, just count the hexes to know the range. But that's for playing at home. If I went off somewhere and the only game was hexless, then that's the game I'd have to play.

well, i like hexes because i was taught to play with hexes.

i spend most of my your career as a mechwarrior learning to master hexes.

its simple, fast. The rules are concrete.

with terrain, people will have to know all the measurement conventions.
also, not everybody is suited to playing on terrain. Some people are petty and must win.

with hexes, you forgo potential arguements.

i say with hexed terrain. but that stuff is costly.

The only time I ever play hex-less is when I play at your house. Otherwise I vastly prefer Hexes as it makes the game go by SO much quicker!

I've never played a hex-less game, but I would give it a try.

I definately would try if it were a kewl scenerio. I think it's good to shake players up once in a while and see what they have for tactical skills rather than just being rules lawyers/chess players.

I prefer hexes because too many people "cheat" playing hexless.

I'm "insinuating" that in every hex-less game I've ever played in or saw someone was cheating on their movement.

uuummmmm......okay, well then what do we all think is a proper punishment for someone caught sleazing their movement or ranges during a hex-less scenario? I run a hex-less BT campaign, so I am genuinely interested in hearing some good ideas here -although I have to say that with the 3 or 4 players that frequent my campaign, cheating is generally not a prob.

"1) more realistic movement (your turns are not restricted to intervals of 60-degrees)"
--------------------------------------------
You still pay 2" per hex base side, or portion thereof.
--------------------------------------------
"2) easier and more realistic line-of-sight and partial-cover determinations (you just get your eye down there close to the map and look)"
--------------------------------------------
This can be a real can of worms. Someone with a laser pointer can "see" the neck & head of the target humanoid mech. They want to call that "partial cover" and roll for torso and arm hits.

On the plus side, good looking terrain can realy draw people to a game table.
1) You have to be the ref. Your calls are final.
2) Work from the BMR(r) for a standard set of rules.
3) Come up with a standard sighting rule ie.
you must be able to see more than 50% of the location to hit it.

Hi Lobsterback,

Yes, you are correct in that turning costs are based on a per hexside rule. However, the cool thing about hex-less BT is you are not restricted to turning an exact number of faces (in other words, you are allowed to turn one-and-a-half hex faces, or nine-tenths of the hex face). With a hex grid, it is impossible to turn 90-degrees, but to do this with a hex-less system, you just pay 2 MP and do it (1 MP for the first hex face and a second MP for the fractional hex face). Another thing that I don't like about hex grids (kind the same topic) is that you can move quickly north-to-south, but moving east-to-west is slow b/c you have to keep zig-zagging.

I totally agree about the "referee" part, --you gotta have one person who is the final word. As far as rules go, I really like the "miniatures rules" that are included in the BT Master rulebook, and I use these rules with only minor alterations. These rules also address the "partial cover" issues that you mentioned.

I'm all for public stoning of offenders, but I've been told that might be a tad harsh.

Playing in friendly games or campaings you'll find "honest" errors, and those tend to even themsevles out...but when you get a ton of guys that aren't familiar with each other you'll get people taking advantage.

Hell, how many people do we catch every year getting their heat wrong? And that's simple compared to hexless moving...
