Well, I just now finished reading The Return of the King, thereby finally acheiving this most basic of nerd-ly requirements. Seriously, I *like* this book, and I'm not sure I can wait over a year for the movie. I want to see some of these scenes in full, living color with earthquake inducing bass! And no, I'm not going to give any of it away, unless someone wants me to or doesn't mind. But still, AAAAAAAHHHHH I want to see this movie! And I must say, it could not have ended any other way. I almost wanted it to, but it wouldn't have worked.

Congrats on finishing the series. You can now be promoted to 2nd class nerd.
Not bad for a book nearly 50 years old, eh?

Acknowledged. Too many fantasy writers just go straight for "bigger is better". More magic, more fights, stronger heroes and Ultimate Enemy of Life number umpteen.

Read it, loved it, the movie didn't do it justice, but had some of its own merits.
"Lucifer's Hammer by Niven and Pournelle
Dream Park by Niven and Pournelle"
I think I've heard of the authors, but I'm not too certain.
"Dragonriders of Pern by McAffrey"
*a la Homer* aaaaaaagggggggggghhhh
And one I wish to add, not quite required but probably extra credit, anything by Terry Pratchett, 'specially the Night Watch series.

I just finished that, and it was brilliantly written. Less of a plotted novel that Clancy's Jack Ryan series, but still execellent in it's own right. It had a good premise, but you really can't plot something such as a war. However the technical detail was execellent (as always) and the characters were nicely fleshed out.
