How do most of you go about selecting terrain to do battle over?
Do you use the random map generators?
Do you turn a bunch of maps upside down and then pick at random?
Do you have each player draw one map and what ever is drawn is what is used?
For those of you who use 3D terrain, (i.e. Geo-hex or other similar items) how do you pick what is actually used?
If you have a home grown way of picking maps etc...could you share it with us?
Also if you use a combo of maps and 3D Terrain any ideas on how that helps or what not are welcome as well...

Mordel and I use the highly scientific method of reaching into my stack of maps and pulling one out. And if it doesn't match the type of game we want to play we'll reach in and grab another.
Not a great answer, but its how we do it

We used to start with a blank field and randomly place Terrain on it....

Most of the games I play are based on scenerios in novels or sourcebooks so I try to stay close to the descriptions found there. For pick-up games I like to try new terrains to battle on, using maps from the newer sets that I've just made 3-D to keep it fresh. I mean how many games have we played on the Basic board......booooorrrrriiiiinnnnngggg.

I use my own homemade 3D terrain. I made this terrain without hexes, so it utilizes the optional miniatures rules that appear in the Master Rules book (which, BTW, I really like). This terrain is very cheap to produce, and I can make just about as much of any one type of terrain feature as I want (I like lots of broad, low, rolling hills and small patches of woods).
Usually for scenarios in my campaign, I just look at the "big map" to see what kind of terrain is common in that region (lots of hills, lots of forests, lots of water, ...whatever), then I just throw the terrain features onto the terrain base in a way that is mostly random. In the end, I usually will tweak the terrain a little bit to make for a couple of "interesting" features (maybe creating a killing zone or a strategically-valuable area). Also, (obviously) in many cases the scenario objectives themselves make some of the terrain decisions for me (for example, if the objectives are to capture a bridge that spans a wide, torrential river....well.... )

Any pics of your terrain to share with us? Previous battle pix or such?

Hi Horhiro,
Yeah, I can post some pics (gee, I hope that request was directed at me ). I'll have to do it later, 'cause I'm at work and all my BT pics are on my home HD. Just to make sure expectations don't get too high, though, it's not nearly as cool as your "threedeeized" mapsheets. ...those things totaly rock!

Hey thanks bud, glad you like 'em. I know I would still enjoy seeing what you've done. It always brings me joy to see someone playing BTech on 3-D terrain.
That's one of the most enjoyable things I like about it. The mech minis, the terrain. Kind of like playing plastic Army Men in a sandbox when you were a kid.....but with rules.
And BTW your Lumpy Labrynth terrain rocks!

Nice pics! Really like the bridge shot! Also like how you did the names up on the bases.
Nice gun on the Shadow Hawk, if I can ask what did you use?

Thanks Karagin!
Glad ya like the pics.
As for the Shadow Hawk, the arm-mounted laser is Citadel Colors Boltgun Metal followed by a grey wash. The AC/5 was painted with Polyscale Scale Black, followed by a black wash, a Scale Black dry-brush and lastly a very light dry-brush with Citadel Colors Boltgun Metal.

The effects are really impressive. It makes the Shadow Hawk look like it's carrying more then it actually does.
Again excellent job!

Thanks fellas.
Horhiro- Yeah, I made the buildings out of styrofoam, covered with lightweight cardboard and wooden chicklets that I bought at a craft shop.
Sir Henry- mmmmmm.....I've been working on it very slowly over a long period of time. A low hill takes me just a couple hours. A stand of trees takes me about 5 or 6 hours. Granted, the vast majority of that time is spent waiting for paint or glue to dry.
The rocky plateaus (which you can see in the 4th picture) are more time-consuming. With those I actually have to paint shadows and highlights to make it look like rock. The grassy pieces are qicker that way 'cause I just douse them with green railroad flocking.
"Flock ME!?!? NO!!!! Flock YOU!!!!!"
The river pieces are the slowest, b/c I cast them myself with plastic resin and silicone rubber molds. Just got tired of paying $2-3 for a 5 inch-long segment of river (that really mounts-up when you decide you want 15 feet of river pieces). Casting them myself I can make them for probably around $.20 per segment.
