I bet that this whole thing started with an overprotective parent. That always seems to be the root of this type of change.

It was. It seems to me like a knee-jerk reaction from the school, who are probably worried that they are going to get sued. Have the kid carry around his epiphidrine pens in a little pouch and let him eat in the office. Have the rest of the kids who have peanut butter on their hands wash up when they get to class.

Never eaten the stuff. Or maybe once, in England, it was the filling of a candy bar that looked and tasted like machinery grease, it looks foul and considering its origin, it's probably pure fat and too chaloric to be healthy.

I think you Americans are the only ones to eat the stuff, probably because you have a major production, I suspect peanut butter is one of the infamous vegetable fats that are used for cooking for industrial pastries, those fats like palm oil and such are even worse than animal fat.

Dried fruits are very rich foodstuffs, and I am myself addicted to peanuts, but considering their high caloric content, they should be eaten in moderation. Gulping down a can of peanuts with beer while you watch the football isn't healthy.

The excuse about peanut butter having protein content it's just an excuse for being cheap in feeding schoolchildren. It would be more expensive to hand out ham sandwiches.

I think the school is overreacting just to avoid being sued, but the side benefit is that it may turn schoolchildren to better low fat food and prevent them from becoming overweight adults. It's self evident that Americans have to improve their diet.

Or maybe not, the alternatives to peanut butter could be worse from a nutrition viewpoint *shudders*

People alergic to peanuts can die within minutes of eating it.

Let's say a couple 6 year olds decide to switch lunches and it turns out that one of the kids is alergic to peanuts and eats some. By the time an adult realizes what happened it could be too late.

So here I don't think they are over reacting.

What you say is true...ONLY if no ones knows the child is allegeric to the peanuts...and as I said, most schools will have someone watching the children that have the problem so to not have anything happen and it is normally more then one person watching them.

BUT out right banning peanut butter is silly, as said in the report it is cheap and easy item to feed kids. Other things could have been done before they went to banning it. Over reaction seems to be the rule of thumb here.

Wouldn't you assume that the child has had the allergy diagnosed before this? From the way you make it sound, it wouldn't be too hard.

It would make sense that at some point they would have been seen by a doctor and the test would have shown that they were allergic to peanuts.

As the report said the knows WHO and HOW MANY are allergic thus their over reaction.

I have, I'm allergic to Ammoxicillan (A prescript med) and have bad pollen allergies. They found it out when I was having some blood work done, they told me I have the antibody for chicken pox immunity even though I never had them.

I was tested as child and found that certain molds can cause me to get a sore throat and watery eyes.

The Army tested me and they of course found nothing wrong...not sure what testing they did but they said I was fine.

So essentially this comes down to what level of risk is acceptable to schools and/or parents. Personally, I'm all for peanut butter; that the parents need to be responsible with their children if they are allergic, and if they don't know, find out. But as I again found out today in another endless seminar before we can start teaching school again this year, a lot of parents don't care, plain and simple. Yes, money is an issue, but their are programs available to work around that obstacle, and truth be told, some children in the low income cangetory are there through poor financial planning and improper financial priorities on the part of the parents.

Each campus gives a list of all students with medical problems to all instructional staff members. Out of 500 students at our junior high campus, about half have some medical issue, most of which is ADD/ADHD. Not a single student has a peanut allergy. I have yet to hear of one in our entire district either (roughly 7 to 8 thousand students), and I travel between a lot of campuses in my job. There's probably one or two out there that I haven't heard about yet; I'm just pointing out that either the statistics are off, my area is an anomaly, or a bunch of kids either don't know or won't admit it.

That's my two PB sandwiches worth

One of my Criminolgy professors is an expatriate from Cuba (Bay of Pigs, et al) and swears that peanut butter is a form of torture. He says that when he first got to America, the immigration people gave everyone a "traditional American Peanut Butter sandwich" and said "Welcome to America!" They didn't tell them that PB sticks to the roof of your mouth, and they especially didn't tell them that drinking milk is a good way to get it off. So they were all there with PB stuck to the roof of their mouth without knowing how to get it off...

Torture. Pure torture he told us. And he should know, he's been trained by the CIA and several other agencies on how to interrogate people.

Well just add one more stupid rule on the list from the Cobb County Board of Education. Wouldn't worry about this one because the people running the schools and county in general are morons. Should see the one where keychains where banned because they could be used as a weapon.

A six year old was expelled by the same pack of idiots because she might have decided to kill someone with the rubber twitty bird on her keychain.

Marlboro who really have living and working in Cobb County.
