When I was younger I had a friend die because he ate something that contained peanuts and he was allergic to them. I read a study somewhere that says 1 in 11 kids are allergic to peanuts.
You may want to do some research and re-examine your position on this issue

I have, and I realize the risks. Still, the measures they have taken are extreme. About 1% of people have this allergy, not 1 in 11. Exposure to peanut dust even in extremely small quanitites can cause a reaction, sure. But you don't get any dust from eating a sandwich, you typically get it from cooking fumes or opening a jar of PB. Besides, it's besides the point: peanut butter is in tons of stuff: pastries, frostings (as a thickener), egg rolls (seal them shut), pretty much every candy bar and it's even mislabeled sometimes as "groundnuts". It's a child's responsibliity to stay away from the peanuts, not the other, vast majority of kids. Peanut butter is a cheap, easy, and effective sorce of protein. Would it really be so hard as to have this kid eat in the office or a classroom during lunch? You can't ban everything containing peanuts or peanut butter, it's the afflicted person's responsibility to stay away from it.

The daycare/preschool that my girlfriend and I have her 4 year old in doesn't allow peanut butter either. Which I did find weird. They didn't allow a lot of things, actually. Oh well, we just work around it. There are tons of things for the kids to eat other then peanut butter. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

There was a kid who was allegeric to peanuts in my high school, all he did was watch what he ate. Same thing he had been doing all of his life and he is still alive and has 3 kids of his own.
Seems that if it is only a few kids then going to this extreme is really more of the school playing CYA. What are they going to do if a child is diabetic or is allegeric to bees? Cancelle out door actives since he or she may get stung?
They could have handled this better then they have.

Please read what I wrote carefully....1 in 11 kids are alergic to peanuts in some form or another. Many outgrow it, some do not.
I think if you look at the stats you'll find that it probably does work out close to 1% of the general population.

Thus they are over reacting...and for the record the kid in my high school was the ONLY ONE who was allegeric to peanuts.
Statistics are wonderful things...you can get them to say anything...like those bill boards that claim a child is shot every 10 seconds. At that rate and based on their wording one would expect to see every child in the hosptial for a gun shot wound at least on a weekly bases.

In high school its easy to watch what you eat. When you're 7 sometimes you don't realize what you're doing. Many elementary schools here in MA don't searve anything with peanut butter so I've already read this whole debate before.
BTW, schools don't do candy here because of the whole diabetes thing. Not sure about bee stings...

Let's see....1 in 11 means about 9% of all children are alergic to peanut butter in some manner. That whole "every 'x' amount of time something happens" is all crap and not the same at all.
So I don't think they are over reacting.

ok I think I'm being an idiot for joining the debate but first off I have to say chihawk that it sucks that your friend died from peanut butter and I see where your coming from so I would see where they are coming from with this new rule. I don't believe that the statistics are that bad but I might be wrong. So..... I would have to support the idea in some aspects but It might be a little extreme. i mean they could have a section labeled this stuff contains peanut butter or something like that. Thats what i would do anyway _________________ You want some? Come and get it

The law already is that any food product that contains peanut products must be clearly labeled as such.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the school knows which kids are allegeric and thus can control what is served to them during lunch time and their teachers would know as well...
One would think that between telling the cafiteria personnel and the teachers the problem would be under control and thus the banning of a cheap lunch for the majority of the other children would not be needed.
Seems the school is more worried about being sued then anything else.
I know for a fact that most school at least in Virginia and Michigan inform their teachers about students with medical problems like diabites and other such things so that they can plan accordingly and be ready if something goes wrong, thus no banning of candy or other foods are done.
I am sorry but to me it seems they are over reacting and playing off the worse case scenario to justify their actions.

Bees are creature that don't listen to reason or follow man's laws. You can't do anything about them save keep exposure to a minimum.
The others are food allergies and can be monitored by laws and regulations..
