This was told to me by my father today (my father is an officer in the Spanish Navy), who was at the trial of three enlisted seamen accused of desertion.
A frigate of the Spanish Armada patrolling the Indian Ocean (in search for Al Qaida escapees) touched in the port of Mombassa, Kenya.
Now, the three seamen are youngsters of about 20 years of age, and they are of Moroccan origin, (picture them as Mexicans or whatever inmigrant or minority group you want to pick on) and barely fluent in Spanish.
Now, a seaman earns a lot of money when they are on a cruise, about $3000 and incredibly, when they go in shore leave, the Navy pays it all up front and in cash, instead of transferring the money into a bank account, or deferring payment until coming back to home. Makes me wonder why I didn't joined the navy.
These three guys went for a shore leave of 12 hours, they had to be back at the ship at dawn next morning. So here is a recipe for disaster: three uneducated youngsters, of low social extraction, alone in a foreign, third World country, and with the pockets full of cash that represents a small fortune in a country like that.
Predictably, they didn't come back next morning, so a party of marines was sent to find them. The adventures they went through in their search of the lost seamen are quite amusing in their own right, as they ventured into the depths of the waterfront and the underworld of Mombassa looking for them. Following their trail was quite easy, as they had become the sensation of every bar, disco, brothel, casino and hotel they had been to.
Well, one of the seamen was found, though dead, from the combination of alcohol and overdose of multiple drugs.
Another one had the brilliant idea of doing some tourism of going to see the Kilimanjaro, that is quite a few hundred kilometers to the interior of the country, and he said "since the ship was going to touch at the port of Djibouti, I thought I could take a taxi or a hired car later, and board the ship there"
Needless to say, he was wrong. He was robbed, stripped of all his money and clothes and dumped in the middle of the countryside, and he was damn lucky to not being eaten by a lion or biten by a snake. Eventually he made it to some village where the local police held him in custody until he was picked up.
Another one after wild partying in the sleaziest parts of the city and being very drunk was beaten, robbed, and left unsconcious in an alley. Next day he made it to the harbor, to see that the ship had already departed. He approached a Turkish ship thinking "well, these guys are in the NATO, so I'll talk to them and they will give me a ride to my ship". The Turkish weren't very sympathetic and tried to turn him away thinking he was some beggar, he confronted the guards and they gave him a beating, but he raised enough a racket that the watch officer of the the Turkish ship came to investigate what was going on. Once it was verified his identity, they threw him into the brig as a deserter and held him for two weeks under a rendezvous with the Spanish ship could be arranged.
The last one under the effects of alcohol, got in love with a prostitute and brought her to her hotel room. When he woke up with a killer hangover early next morning , the whore was hysterical saying that she was pregnant. The seaman declared "I had a huge headache and was very tired, so I comforted her, and went to sleep again" when he woke up the ship was already gone, but showing up some common sense made it to the Spanish consulate, where he was picked up by the party of marines. There was a very funny scene when the alleged family of the whore appeared and demanded compensation arguing that her daughter was pregnant, and that he had married her last night. Eventually they were driven away with a large bribe and threats of physical violence on the part of the marines if they kept complaining.
The court could barely keep from laughing at the tale, I think that whatever sentence the court imposes on them it cannot compare with the consequences of their stupidity.
I wonder if anybody of you know of similar stories in the services. _________________ Memento audare semper

Actually, I do!
On the tour that replaced my Battle Group in Bosnia, there was a 30 year old Corporal, clerk. Well, he wasn't very well liked by his peers, and had no friends or family back home. So, time came for his first 96 hour R&R Block, he went to Budapest, Hungary (A great city, I have stories of my own from there which will not be discussed here!). Anyhow, for those of you who aren't aware, Budapest has a tremendous Mafia run Prostitution industry going. So large, in fact, that certain bars were limiting the nationality of it's patrons (as in Canadians only, not even locals! A funny story about one such place I visited... never mind!)
So, this Corporal spends his R&R in one of these brothels, and spends all his money, but leaves happy. Well, his 18 day leave comes, and, instead of touring Europe with friends or family, or going home, he goes back to the Brothel in Budapest, and spends all 18 days there. He ends up getting tattoos of all the bar's logos all over himself, and spends (and the story varies here), between $5000 and $15000!
In fact, I heard this story in Canada while it was happening, (there aren't many secrets in the Canadian Army!)
So, anyhow, the next summer I'm teaching the Drill instructors course, and who's one of the other instructors... This guy! And, when asked if the stories were true, he not only admitted it, he boasted about it!

I'm sure it'll be a nice fish story.

Before I post this story...DEFINATELY NC-17...I want to make sure whether it's GO/NO-GO
It does involve strippers, money, me with some dude's wife (I didn't know she was married), MPs, and "borrowing" a car.

As much as I'd love to hear it with the sudden proliferation of youngin's on the board I think it has to be "no-go"
