Well some people are going have called into question my choice of Founding ComStar as not viable as a top 3 choice. I do offer it up as a poll and I will support it.
1) This made Terra a neutral planet. In doing so this moved the battles away from an exclusive corridor zone policy. Also protected much of the human knowledge that had not been slagged already.
2) Made sure all communication were still intact. IF they great houses were the only ones in control the communication would have stopped at the borders. This allowed trade and continued spying to go on. Also I think the net would have degenerated after the years. Communication would have returned to the age of sail type slow.
3) They used the information to keep most forces in check. This was more prevalent later, after the 1st Succession War, as they (the 5 houses)had nuked everything. So they either leaked info on put a lockdown on it. Hard to fight blind and it helps if you can read their mail.
4) Gave a neutral party to allow negotiations to occur. This is critical in many of the alliances and ends of wars.
5) Were the protectors of human knowledge. Yeah it may have been misguided but it did keep everyone in check. What do think Minrou, Hanse, or Alessandro would do if they had lets say.... warship plans? Would not have been pretty. Plus some one else would have gotten them and the level of destruction would have increased.
6) And the big one in recent times, they kept the Clanner invasion secret for those precious first few months. Think if a message had gotten out at The Rock?
7) They were the antithesis and at the same time representative of all that was the Star League. They at the right time coordinated the IS and saved it. Also at the same time they have given the Clans another reason to claim Terra.
All other items are just events, the formation of ComStar allowed many other things to occur. Yeah with out the Aramis coup, or the Exodus, ComStar would not have occurred but this took a life of its own.
AWAD- Not a great support argument but not bad for off the cuff

They've pretty much had a hand in everyone's cookie jar. That gets my vote for Major Plot.

They provided a common frame of reference, Nothing more. They were to insular for my taste.
How many books were written about Comstar and how many were written for a House or Clan????

I agree with Horhiro: ComStar has shown their importance by being everywhere. There haven't been that many books specifically about them because they are in just about all of the other ones somewhere. They prefered to stay quietly in the shadows, so of course no one really focused on them.

They certainly came out of the shadows in the Blood of Kerensky trilogy. They tried to screw the whole IS royaly, and then kicked the Clans' arses for good measure on Tukayyid. No need to hide after that!

i said story line....
think...
no comstar...
no communications interdiction during the 4th succession war.
result: loss of CapCon
no slowing the message of clan invasion
result: drastic changes. some better, some worse....

naa Cullvern I think you are missing a ton of things still. In most wars they have relied on comstar to be the neutral party for treaties, and without comstar there were no strictly neuatral parties. so...... If comstar wasnt around I have no Idea what would hvae happened.

Comstar shmomstar. Btechs big, mystical AT&T played a minor role throughout Btech history. Protectors of technology? Big whoop, since they weren't at all helpful in establishing the technology renaissance leading to the return of Star League tech. Neutral party for treaties? Who needs them, that's what ambassadors are for. Keeping communciations running? Might have happened without them.
The only thing they have that qualifies for a major event is the Battle on Tukayid. And one battle is not enough to make them "major players," IMO.

oh on the contrary one battle may be important enough. Also I think you are underplaying them alot they were more important then you think.
