As I understand it, there are alternate rules around the MGs which allow for burst-fire or rapid fire.

You roll 1d6 and you deal that much damage and heat, and use 3x that amount of armor, is that correct?

My questions around this are:

1) You perform this roll before the role that determines if the shot hits, correct? That way, just like all weapons, you still expend the ammo and suffer the heat, even if you miss.

2) Is there a year restriction on when this alternative can be done?

3) Is this modification to the rules considered fairly standard, or is it rare among players?

4) Is there any compelling reason to not make this a house rule if all players agree? (Maybe I'm missing a massive imbalance it creates, or there's an additional rule we should add on top to balance it out.)

Any and all thoughts and opinions welcome, thanks!

1. Correct

2. Nope, just a pre-battle mod you need to mark before the start of the game.

3. It's pretty obscure, IMO.

4. Do you mean as in to make it standard in your games or to use it in general?

Thank you!

4) To use it in general. I'm mentally comparing it to the video games, where it still does low damage but has a higher crit chance. But with rapid fire, you could do a relatively massive 12 damage. Maybe that's too OP?

Fundamentally, we played a couple matches, found MGs to be disappointing, and heard about the alternate rules, and I'd rather use those than just dump my ammo every match, but I don't want mt CPLT-K2 to become OP.

The limiting factor is heat, so they're not too OP.

Unless you put them on tanks.... Used to be able to do it with MG battle amor but that got nixed.

Technically this should increase the BV of machine guns, but its fairly minor on average so details.

Ok, that makes sense. Thanks!

Due to the random nature, I don't think of it as OP. I'll run mechs with and without it in the same game of MegaMek, because it's situational.
