Politics, pure politics. How long did the pledge exist without reference to god? How long after the change?
Why sweat it? If you are religious, use the reference to god for, if not, skip it.
I do have a problem with people saying that religion should have nothing to do with our country. Watever religion you have it form the frame work of your values, how you should behave in life. How GOOD and BAD are determined, etc. I regard religion as necessary, what I believe the separation of church and state was about was the Anglican chrurch formed by england when the pope would not cooperate with king henry. The Papist/ Protestant wars in europe wher governments went to wars over the issue, sometimes civil ones.
I have no problem with government acknowledging that religion exists and that GOD is used as a casual reference to the divine (singular or plural).
The 9th District is constanly trying crackpot ideas, and is routinely overturned. I will not worry about it.

Now I have heard that some religious people, mostly in the south, are very mad about this ruling. I just want to ask them one question:
"Does God really give a &*@# ?"
Has there been any violence related to this yet? Remember that Religion is the leading cause of death in the world.

Hey, in my history book it said: "The words "Under God" were added to the pledge of alleigence in 19(somethinorother) at the urging of Eisenhower."
-Just adding another source, don't martyr me for it.

1954 is the date and while Ike might have been president he really had nothing to do with it at all. The Knights of Columbus and a Democrate Senator from Michigan, I don't recall his name right off hand but I can get it.
As is being shown there are so many versions of who did what on this most seem to fall into the urban religion catogery.

1954 ? Wasn't that during the time when McCarthy tried to do the same to the United States what the Taliban later did to Afganistan ?

In simple terms, no. The fear of Communism did cause some incredibly silly things to be done, but to compare it with the Taliban is even sillier.
I know you're just looking for a confrontation in this (you know, your standard "make a comment that's totally outrageous and use a ' '" or claim your normally very good use of English is failing you so you can say whatever you want), so I'll just let everyone laugh at your comment and move on.

The "Habs" are the Montreal Canadiens, a team in the National Hockey League. They are not well liked by many hockey fans.
YM and HTH mean exactly what AQ says they mean.
Oh yeah, I forgot the " "

MEX sounds like this one goob we have infesting the hockey boards over at fanhome.com. Eddie Van Halen (the guy's userID) is also a Kraut, and loves doing the same thing--posting completely stupid stuff to deliberately incite a flamefest (like, for example, claiming that a Montreal fan's throwing of bananas at the Carolina Hurricanes' black goaltender during the Stanley Cup playoffs wasn't intended as a racial slur because the Jerry soccer fans do the same thing to Oliver Kahn--who, as we all know, is a cracker) and then claiming that he was either kidding or that he suddenly forgot how to speak English despite the fact that he speaks it better than some Ph.Ds I know.
10 Quatloos says they're the same guy.
