Overview:
In May 3067 the graduating classes of the Luthien Academy Of Military Design got a
challenging task to accomplish.
They had to design a BattleMech with the latest CAD-technology and under following terms:
1. Take a classic BattleMech design used in the 3rd Succession War.
2. Construct an OmniMech chassis upon this basis.
3. Suggest weapon configurations for that chassis; at least four but not more than seven.
3. a) The primary configuration has to be based upon the original weapon layout of the
classic design.
3. b) If possible include following configuration types: city-fighter, LRM-support,
fire-support/sniper.
All OmniMechs were graded by a committee and loaded into a battlefield simulation program.
The SHD-O was presented by Student Yui Wong.
Capabilities:
The base design was constructed with the new and popular light engine and EndoSteel wrapped
in a shell of standard armor. Student Wong decided to put a fixed jump jet system in to ease
maintenance. This measures resulted in a 21 ton pod space.
The prime configuration tries to be very close to the original specifications. The light
gauss rifle gives it the tremendous range that the old AC/5 lost in these days while lasers
and SRM's form the close range firepower. An ECM rounds out this configuration.
The A carries an unsuspected heavy weapon: An LB20-X. Supported by some ER lasers and
augmented by the integral jump jets and a C3-slave this weapon can be very dangerous even to
heavier foes.
Pulse lasers and streak missiles make the B configuration a dedicated street fighter. Even
though the targeting computer isn't able to guide pulse laser fire to specific parts of an
enemy mech it can negate some of the effects that a jump has on targeting.
The C carries an huge, Artemis supported LRM rack with an impressiv amount of CASEd
ammunition. Lasers and SRM's deliver defensiv firepower and a C3-slave can link this mech
into an appropriate network.
An ER-PPC plus targeting computer makes the D a much though of configuration. The added
C3-link will make this combination even more dangerous. The rest of its weaponry consists of
a short and a medium range missile rack as well as an ER laser.
The trials in the academys battlefield simulation program revealed no real problems.
Each configuration worked well within its intended role and especially the D seemed to
perform well beyond expectations.
