Overview:
Known for experiments designs and reserve engineering clan tech after their invasion, Etna
Industry began work on their first tripod design in an attempt to leverage its unique
capabilities. Original efforts were aimless until one engineer hit upon the idea of
implementing two Large Shields into the design. This offered near perfect defensive
coverage, leaving just its central rear torso exposed, a perfect place to mount weapons and
the tripods gunner cockpit. While prototypes struggled with speed, Etna Industries overcame
this by implementing various clan-grade weight-saving technologies. When the Nephrops was
finalized, it was among the most durable mechs ever produced while still boasting a
respectable amount of firepower.
Capabilities:
The Nephrops’s weaponry is entirely contained in its rear central torso, a seemingly
strange choice that is of minimal consequence thanks to the tripods ability to 360 degree
torso twist. These armarments are simple but effective, being two ER PPC that have enough
range and damage to genuinely threaten any target they are pointed at. Inorder to remain
heat neutral, the NRP-N1 is equipped with 16 double heat sinks, allowing it to both maintain
constant fire and its top speed of 54km/h.
Far more impressive are its defensive capabilities. While its 11 tons of ferro-fibrous
plating is fairly average for its weight class, its effectiveness is multiplied by two Large
Shields mounted on each arm that can reduce even the most devastating of weapons to mere
chip damage. These were made Jettison Capable so that they could be dropped when fully
spent, allowing for the mech to accelerate to a far more respectable 86.4km/h. However,
pilots that do so also expose the designs weaker head armor, a normally inconsequential
issue with the shields active.
Deployment:
The [???] earned itself the nickname of "Lobster" due to a vague reseblance of the Crab
CRB-27 and its habbit of dropping its arms before retreating, only to reappear with new ones
after quick maitenance. This in itself reflects how many pilots choose to use the mech,
marching forward slowly and delivering long range firepower, but dropping their shields as
soon as they become inactive inorder to gain a substantial boost in speed. This extra
mobility is often used to retreat the mech, though occassionally some pilots like to use it
as a surprise inorder to outmaneuver overly confident opponents.
Variants:
NRP-N2: This variant swaps out its ER PPC for an ER Large Lasers and an Improved Heavy Large
Laser. The weight saving allowed for the addition of a C3 slave computer, a targeting
computer, and protectoin for both in an ECM Suite.
Notable MechWarriors:
Quirks: the following are recommended when using these optional rules
- Jettison-Capable Weapons (2 points): both shields
- Weak Head Armor (-2 points): 10+ damage is a head-capper
Thematically you get faster as your shields break, but become far more likely to die to a
lucky head shot at the same time. This makes the two quirks play off one another in a fun
way in this build.
