Overview:
One specialty on the battlefield is that of infantry support, but BattleMech designs rarely
focus on this role.
Enter the Republic of the Sphere’s RYE-2R Ryessygg.
Capabilities:
As it was built around the idea of infantry support, the initial prototype for the Ryessygg
was designed with nothing else in mind, including other foes. The primary weapons are four
racks of SRM-4’s fed by three tons of munitions, allowing specialty ammunition storage.
Backing these weapons are a PIR of anti-personnel gauss rifles fed by two tons of
ammunition, a heavy machine gun with a half ton of ammunition and finally, a type 2 ‘Mech
mortar fed by two tons of ammunition.
The machine itself is armored with ferro-fibrous plating, which is within a half ton of
maximum thickness for its 30 ton weight. To enable the design to detect hidden enemies, an
active probe has been installed as well.
Of course, to enable all of this to be carried on a 30 ton design, some compromises had to
be made. In this case, it is a small type 150 extralight fusion core and a small cockpit.
These make the design vulnerable to side torso loss, as well as increase piloting
difficulties, but the tradeoff was thought to be worth it.
Variants:
There are rumors that near its end, the Republic had decided to take a page from the
Capellan design book and make the Ryessygg an OmniMech design. No real evidence has been
found of this though.
Note: It is thought that if an OmniMech configuration does exist of the Ryessygg, the
primary configuration would duplicate the non-OmniMech version of the design.
