Overview:
The "Claymore", the "Parasol", the ""Mobile" Missile Massacre." These are but a few of the
nicknames given to the Dafydd. Named after the Welsh god of the Welsh Longbow, the Dafydd
is a golden century design with the sole purpose of bringing 'all the missiles' to the
circle of equals.
Capabilities:
The Dafydd Mrk IIs are newly constructed Machines built by Clan Stone Lion. These recently
manufactured vehicles feature updated armor technology, rebalanced launcher layout, and a
cheaper if somewhat heavier engine. A small portion of ammo capacity was given up to free
up tonnage for some of these changes, but not enough to materially affect the expected
battlefield lifespan in a Trial.
Deployment:
The problem with the Dafydd is its ability to fly across the battlefield at the speed of
mach potatoe. This restricts its ability to be used to defensive trials, or to trials large
enough that space points can be bid for transports to get the Dafydd close enough to the
battle lines to matter.
Defensively the Dafydd is an amazing ambusher and area denial asset. It's slow speed once
again can get it into trouble if the attackers can get to its rear flanks. It's not fast
enough to fully turn and engage them with its hull mounted launchers. Fortunately the
turret is capable of engaging such targets. Still the motto "front towards enemy" is taken
to heart by Dafydd crews.
Offensively, the Dafydd is expensive in the bidding system. You may be able to bring 2
tanks per point, but when one is the Dafydd and the other is a Transport you lose some of
that effectiveness. Some is still good enough. With a barrage size of 200 missiles,
Hostile mechs can enjoy fighting in the shade... briefly.
Current production of the Dafydd by Clan Stone Lion is for defensive purposes. It creates a
dangerous hurdle that would be attackers know they'll have to deal with. And the Dafydd
does not prefer to deal directly. Given enough prep time a Dafydd can deploy a massive
minefield quickly, reload and then go hull down in a fox hole for designed for megasaurs.
Given even basic infantry to spot for it, and it will whittle away anything that comes for
it before they ever have a chance to respond.
Variants:
The original Mrk I Dafydd carried a few tons more ammo and also split its launchers into
both the hull and turret to avoid fratricide when ripple firing massive salvos. Only 4
launchers were mounted in the turret to save tonnage for armor. It also used an XL engine
for the same reason.
The Mark III was a rather insane concept. Using an XXL engine to maximize its available
tonnage it forgo almost all physical armor in favor of active defensive systems. ECM,
Command Comsoles and tons of communication equipment were guaranteed to make a hash out of
any mechs targeting system. If you could even get LOS on the things as smoke was a big part
of their doctrine. The concept had further refinements planned; incorporating heavily
augmented pilots potentially pushing otherwise regular crew to what would be considered
elite levels of ability. Which makes it very strange that it incorporated Mech Mortars
instead of LRMs. Thankfully that idea was never tested. It no doubt would of ended badly.
