Overview:
Possibly the strangest Hunchback variant ever built, the HBK-5D was the result of Federated
Suns idiosyncrasies and ingenuity. Desiring a direct fire support platform capable of
engaging a variety of targets at medium to long range, the HBK-5D is odd even by swayback
standards. Mounting a pair of Ultra-Autocannon/5's in the right torso to replace the
standard Autocannon 20, these two weapons are fed by three tons of ammunition in the left
torso protected by CASE. The total number of heat-sinks have been reduced to 10, and to take
the extra weight of weaponry an endo-steel frame was manufactured around a GM supplied
standard fusion engine. The pair of medium lasers and head mounted small laser are kept from
the original HBK-4G design. The result is a machine that on paper, has a similar throw
weight of the standard HBK-4G out to 600 meters. In reality, the jamming risk of the twin
ultra-autocannons reduces the effective firepower, and lacks the mech-stopping power of a
direct AC/20 hit.
Still, it has 10 tons of armor, granting it superb protection for its weight, and the sheer
volume of fire the machine produces doesn't tax the heat system nearly as much as one would
expect - even in a running battle, a mechwarrior with a moderate degree of skill can balance
the load while maintaining a punishing barrage of autocannon fire.
