I'm confused on the alpha strike conversions of these two mechs (they are almost the same mech, with ECM replaced by liquid cargo in the S, but same weapons/HS). Can somebody clarify?
When it determines the long range attack for these, it appears to come up with the right value when determining the OVL, but then goes on to reduce the long range attack. Here is the output:
Determine Overheat Long:
Damage subtotal multiplied by the total heat dissipation (*) 28 = 140.000
Divided by the maximum long-range heat output - 4 (/) 36 = 3.889
Rounded up to the nearest tenth = 3.9
Unit receives the Overheat Long (OVL) special ability
Heat-modified damage value:
Damage subtotal multiplied by the total heat dissipation (*) 28 = 140.000
Divided by the maximum heat output - 4 (/) 50 = 2.800
Rounded up to the nearest tenth = 2.8
Note that the '50' on the 2nd to the last line I *think* should be 36, as the attack should be 4 and not 3.
Am I doing something wrong in my conversions here?

This is per the converting heat errata document.
"Note: the above calculation is used solely to check if the unit qualifies for the OVL special ability. If it does qualify, the unit’s actual Long-range damage is calculated using the exact same procedure and unit heat output as for the Short and Medium-range brackets (including heat generated by weapons that cannot reach Long range)."
In essence, if it gets OVL it uses heat for weapons not capable of firing at long range to determine heat-modified damage. If it doesn't get OVL, it uses heat from only those weapons capable of delivering long-range damage. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

Ok, I think I got it, though it really seems like it may need rewording.
The way it is written, it seems like if a unit *can* overheat at long range, its damage is reduced at long range even when not overheating, which seems to decrease the effectiveness of "sniper like" mechs a bit. If this mech had 1 less ERLL, its LR attack would then be 4 and it would not be OVL compatible.
The example itself seems to be off too, as it states in step 2 you do not add non-LR weapon heat.
Thanks, guess I just need to read over that errata like 20 *more* times and try to not understand it, but just duplicate it.

I agree the wording confused me initially. But I eventually sorted it out with folks and confirmed (not that long ago) the way it currently works. But yes, it's not whether a unit *can* get OVL, but whether a unit actually gets OVL. My initial error when I did the stats was assigning OVL to units that had no overheat, which made no sense and resulted in some of the long-range values being calculated incorrectly. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator
