Overview:
As demanded by the 'Mother Doctrine' since 2380 the Terran Hegemony was able to keep its
technological edge over the other states of the Inner Sphere throughout most of its
existence.
Although fielding a lot of mech-types their neighbors also had in their forces, the Hegemony
equipped their mechs with high-tech items unobtainable to their rivals.
As soon as the Spider walked out of the production line and into the SLDF?s units in 2650
work began to incorporate advanced technology. To strengthen its abilities as a light hunter
and strike mech the SDR-TH1 was wrapped into ferro-fibrous armor and got double heat sinks.
While the original variant carries a heat sink in its head the corresponding, more
voluminous double heat sinks had to be relocated to the right torso. The SDR-TH1 was
commissioned in 2655.
Capabilities:
With formidable speed and maneuverability the Spider rivaled the older Ostscout
reconnaissance mech, but was more tailored for combat and lacked the sophisticated recon
equipment. For this mech hunting light scouts like Stingers, Wasps and even Ostscouts and
?backbiting' were missions as important as ?conventional' reconnaissance. With no worries
about heat and better protection the new variant pleased its pilots.
Deployment:
The Spider was never very numerous and so the SDR-TH1 was a rare sight in the SLDF?s Special
Operations forces.
Variants:
The SDR-TH2 was built in 2660 and should bring electronic countermeasures to its lance
mates. Based on an endo-steel chassis it had enough tonnage freed up to mount a Guardian
ECM-Suite. It kept the standard armor to cut costs.
One of the rarest Spider variants, the SDR-TH3, was more of a mystery than an actual combat
unit. Also called the Spider-X or the Ghostspider this mech was kept a secret by the Special
Forces to an extent, that bombing runs or even a limited orbital bombardment was ordered on
sites, where one of these mechs was lost. Even after the evaluation of the Gray Death Memory
Core and a search of ComStar in their own archives regarding hard data about this Spider
variant nothing was found. It was assumed, that it carried the sophisticated Null Signature
System as well as the Chameleon Light Polarization Shield, heat sinks and maybe high-tech
sensor equipment like the Beagle Active Probe. Speculations about the weaponry comprise of
light or medium laser/pulse laser, flamer, TAG or no weapons at all.
