Aptly named. Given that its intended to harass from LRM range, not to close - would more speed and an XL Engine be worth the increased cost and fragility? Maybe use the tonnage to buy a TAG, or one of your Heavy TAGs. , and/or more ammo for the LRMs.
Maybe not stock, but as an option. Have to check the crit spacing - might end up plowing the saved tonnage back into armor as you might have to give up the Ferro Fibrous for standard plate.

Hmmmmm...
I prefer to keep the cost down and survivability up. Also, as it is a fire support 'Mech, speed isn't so important. Also, in this case there are only 2 free crits so either I have a faster XL with no FF armour, or a slower unit with FF. I tried an XL engine with no FF and seeing as I could buy almost exactly 2 without XL for the cost of one unit with XL it isn't worth it.
If this were reality I don't think that there would be half as many XL equipped units as there are in gameplay. Unless everyone was incredibly rich. Two Harriers without XL would certainly beat an XL Harrier of the same total cost.

Well, if switching to an XL doesn't buy you anything, obviously, you don't switch.
The question of cost is a troubling one. If CBills mattered reliably, that would be one thing. If they never mattered, that would be another. But in universe they seem to matter when the writer thinks it makes cool story, and be ignored otherwise. So we all have to figure out how to approach the issue.
My thoughts below:
Given a successor state may have a population of around 1 Trillion, money just cant be the ONLY thing that matters. And procurement costs != Life Cycle Costs. You may be able to buy 2 SFE mechs for the price of an XL Mech, but if their lifespan costs are the same on a per-mech basis, we might want to buy the XL version even if all it gets us is 'more guns and armor' - depending on what the per-year bill to feed that mech is, vs. the one time procurement cost. This is hard because I dont know how much a mech costs per year in service.
Obviously, if the XL Engine lets you do things that you just CANT with a SFE (things like move really fast while having guns and armor), then you either pay the cost, or do without the capability. Horses for Courses
Practical side of things: Docking Collars are the chokepoint. Dropships and Jumpships are expensive in ways Mechs cannot compare to, and are a very finite resource - in universe you just CANT build all the Jumpships you can afford. So any unit that is going to take up space on a Combat Dropship and/or Jumpship on a military campaign should (IMHO) be as close to perfect as possible for whatever its job is, cost no object - your ability to project combat power is constrained by your spacelift, so you want to cram as MUCH combat power into every docking collar and mech bay as possible.
And if its a defensive/garrison unit, not eating up a collar or drop pods or cargo space cause it rarely moves from the planet it garrisons... it should be as cheap as possible (life cycle, not just procurement) for its combat power. This suggests Standard Fusion Engine mechs, or maybe Fusion Vehicles.
For third string milita that will never leave the planet they were built on... ICE Vehicles, Fusion if the planet can build Fusion (life cycle costs are lower for Fusion than ICE, and garrison units likely live a LONG time - so support matters more than build costs)
