Heavy Target Acquisition Gear

Technology Base:Inner Sphere (Lyran Alliance)
Introduction Date:3067(Experimental), 3069(Advanced)
Tons:3
Critical Slots:3
Short Range:1-8
Medium Range:9-16
Long Range:17-24
Extended Range:25-32
Minimum Range:0
Cost:125,000 C-bills
BV:Following standard rules for TAG BV but adding 225 instead of 200.

Whilst Light TAG was being developed, the idea of a Heavy TAG system was dabbled with by Elite scientists of the Lyran Alliance. With far longer ranges than that of standard or Light TAG, Heavy TAG greatly increases the chance of an indirect fire hit although the significant increase in weight and bulk makes this equipment much harder to mount on the smaller 'Mechs and vehicles that are usually used for Artillery spotting roles.

Improved Heavy Target Acquisition Gear

Technology Base:Inner Sphere (Lyran Alliance)
Introduction Date:3073(Experimental), 3079(Advanced)
Tons:3.5
Critical Slots:4
Short Range:1-8
Medium Range:9-15
Long Range:16-22
Extended Range:23-29
Minimum Range:0
Cost:175,000 C-bills
BV:Following standard rules for TAG BV but adding 250 instead of 200.

An increase in weight and Bulk again over the standard Heavy TAG, Lyran scientists assert that this equipment will provide the ultimate spotter unit for artillery pieces. Whether the Warrior caste finds this to be the case in practice is yet to be determined in battle. In providing a Multi-Trac capability, the range decreased as the weapon did not have enough power to maintain multiple long range signals.

Game Rules: Improved Heavy TAG can track up to 5 targets simultaneously, each for a separate artillery unit, and each being modified as per usual except with additional modifiers depending on how many targets are being tracked. If the spotter unit is equipped with Multi-Trac or Multi-Trac II, then these modifiers are reduced accordingly. These modifiers apply to all targets rather than 'Secondary Target' rules where a modifier is only applied to the secondary target.

Improved Heavy TAG can also be coupled with a Beagle or Bloodhound Active Probe to enable the spotter unit to target units out of LOS. This does, however, reduce the range of the TAG to that of the Probe. All of this range is treated as the short range. The probe must be mounted in the same location as the TAG for allocation purposes. The probe can be activated during the end phase of any turn and is active for the entirety of the next turn (or as many whole turns as needed) at which point the TAG system can be switched back to standard operation. When the probe system is activated, all spotting must be done with it: no LOS spotting can be done until the system is deactivated. Likewise, no probe spotting can be done when TAG is in LOS mode. In addition to this, all attacks made with the probe are modified with an additional +1 on the to-hit roll. Multiple targets cannot be tracked with the probe system.

If the 'Mech is equipped with Multi-Trac I and all targets are out of the front firing arc, then apply the standard +1 modifier for such attacks. Also, if the 'Mech is equipped with Multi-Trac I and is tracking multiple targets, some inside and some out of the front firing arc, then opt for the higher modifier (i.e. treat all targets as if they are outside of the front firing arc) but negate the additional standard +1 modifier.

It may seem like the Improved Heavy TAG is too good for its tonnage, but in reality for it to be a significant advance over standard Heavy TAG it needs both a Bloodhound Active Probe (2 tons) and a Multi-Trac II targeting system (0.5 tons) for a total of 6 tons (including the TAG). Very difficult indeed to mount on a scout ‘Mech or vehicle.

To-Hit roll modifiers for multiple targets:

No Multi-Trac or Multi-Trac I outside of front firing arc:

No. of targets: Modifier:
1 ______________+0
2 ______________+1
3 ______________+3
4 ______________+5
5 ______________+7

Multi-Trac II or Multi-Trac I inside front firing arc:

No. of targets: Modifier:
1 ______________+0
2 ______________+0
3 ______________+1
4 ______________+3
5 ______________+5

Not bad. I'm actually surprised they never came up with Heavy Tag and iHTAG since they seemed to go that route with a lot of other equipment!! Smile

As an FYI, some of the changes I'm making to the database structure as well as the underlying code is working towards the ability to create custom equipment and use it on your designs.
