BattleMech: Shootist ST-8A
Rating: 2.00
Comment: This is a hard-hitting mech with a very bad (or even crippling) design flaw. The mech's got CASE, but both main weapons are out of action if the AC ammo explodes. No wonder the factory had trouble keeping up with battle losses! If they had stuck the ER Large Laser in the Left Arm this mech would be worth at least double the rating I gave it. Half a Shootist that can help out by sniping at 19 hexes would be worth something, but a crippled mech with a few short-range lasers is just so much baggage.

BattleMech: Lightning LGH-3K
Rating: 4.00
Comment: Quit whining about the armor, guys. The Lightning is quite thick-skinned compared to the FWL's new Hermes models, mechs that draw the same sort of missions. Scouting, recon, harassment while heavier units handle head-on confrontation.

This machine isn't meant to get shot at and it's got the speed to run for it when necessary. The weapons package is heavy enough to damage other lights and the C3 lets team mates kick serious butt. Lacking CASE looks bad, but with light mechs (and IS XL engines) it's not very important anyway. Downed raiders can't be salvaged unless you're going to stay around, and then it's not a raid anymore.

My only complaint is the lack of hand actuators. I prefer my raider mechs with hands so they can grab the occasional valuable spare part or whatever you need to pick up.

I'll have to dock you a point for the missing hands.

BattleMech: Lightning LGH-3K1
Rating: 4.00
Comment: I'll disagree on the "dying immediately after using the TAG". This spotter doesn't actually have to be the closest to the enemy thanks to the C3 network! That's what I call unfair, getting clobbered by C3 mechs AND laser-guided munitions at the same time.

The missing hands aren't quite as annoying in a spotter, but I've found another complaint. The TAG could be placed in a hand for a wider field of fire. Other than that this is a perfect spotter for units containing the base model. My arguments for using the 3K hold true for the 3K1.

BattleMech: Wolfhound WLF-4S
Rating: 4.00
Comment: A good scout mech, but it's equally good as a defensive unit in a lance. I like keeping an ECM unit around in case someone brings C3 mechs against me. This one is fast, tough and quite well armed for the weight class, and the price is less than other specialists that often mount XL engines.

I wouldn't replace old 2S Wolfhounds as much as mix this version with them. Everyone's got a Large Laser. As long as the 4S doesn't run too fast the enemy won't know which of them carries the electronics.

BattleMech: Atlas AS7-D
Rating: 4.50
Comment: After seeing this oldster rip apart people in a small friendly tournament I can only say that it's still fearsome. You'll just have to think harder now that there's all kinds of new stuff on the battlefield. Atlas vs Stormcrow C in Liao arena, 1-0. Atlas vs Wraith on 2 standard maps, 1-0.

The 12 LRM reloads mean you can just sit in a Heavy Woods hex, plinking away at those who don't dare close in. There are mechs with heavier short-range firepower, but you can take it for a while. The only problem is getting close enough, but that can be arranged by herding the enemy into a corner or having other units tie him up.

BattleMech: Assassin ASN-22
Rating: 3.00
Comment: This is a good example of a less-than-inspiring workhorse mech. I can see it used as support for better mechs, trying to slash at backsides while the enemy deals with real threats. All things considered it fits well in the DCMS. Dropping the LRM rack for full jump capability, an extra SRM and ammo would probably improve it quite a bit.

BattleMech: Mackie MSK-6S
Rating: 5.00
Comment: This rating applies to the time the MSK was introduced. It was the single most fearsome unit available! It was replaced by better mechs long ago, but when it appeared it was the best. Also the only battlemech...

BattleMech: Grand Titan T-IT-N10M
Rating: 2.50
Comment: The Grand Titan should probably be renamed. The Average Titan? I've seen it lose twice against the Atlas the commercials claim it can beat.

The weaponry is fearsome once you get into range, but that is the wrong direction to go with clanners at the door. This isn't a front-line unit, even if people try to sell it as such. It's a super-heavy cleaner, useful once the real fighters have moved through the enemy positions. Unfortunately most commanders will find it too expensive for a job that infantry and vehicles can handle.

BattleMech: Behemoth (Stone Rhino)
Rating: 4.50
Comment: I give the Behemoth a high rating because it's so much better than most of the clanners assault omnimechs. Honestly, this monster eats a Daishi for breakfast and still goes looking for lunch. Even clanners will find that dismantling it costs more omnimechs than it's worth.

BattleMech: Penetrator PTR-4D
Rating: 4.00
Comment: I haven't used this one myself, but one of my opponents likes it very much. It's always hard to get rid of since it's so tough and can jump for cover if outclassed. The almost-useless AMS and the fact that IS ER Large Lasers are a bit light as primary guns on a heavy mech costs it a point.
