Even though the HGR's have their maximum damage at a rather short range it still can deliver more firepower than a standard gauss at ranges up to 13 hexes!
Only at 14 or more hexes they loose the impressive damage capacity though still are weapons the enemy has to deal with.
16 shots per weapon aren't bad but when out of ammo the lasers will deliver only token defensive-firepower.
Against other assaults this mech will be hard to take down: Full armor, CASE and a standard engine.
So concentrate your heavy firepower on enemies that are worth it and use the lasers for support or against some small mechs straying close (though this kind of mech should better be guarded by faster mechs against such attacks!). |

The Fafnir is strictly a heavy/assault mech killer, and can devastating if adequately supported and protected. The Heavy Gauss rifles do more damage than AC/20s with double the range. If used properly the Fafnir can take on even the toughest of clan mechs, which obviously was its intended role. That being said, if this mech is not supported by others or the Fafnir is on its own it's pretty much ineffective, since if it has to constantly fire it's big guns at smaller mechs harassing it then its effectiveness is diluted. |

This is a good urban fighter. The ECM lets is sneak up to enemy mechs and then let loose. Twin heavy gauss rifles will eat up any mech. The lack of an XL engine helps survivability as does the armor. The only problem is ammo dependency. Once you're out of ammo, you don't have any powerful backup weapons. Still, the Fafnir is a solid mech. |

Poor choice of weaponry to base a Mech around, but lets face, its scary.
The threat of even ONE of the two heavy gauss rifles hitting is worrying. It is an instant piloting skill check at close range...
Tactically, this will need support from other Mechs and in turn acts to deny areas to enemy Mechs (by hopefully scaring them off).

This isnt a very pretty design and its isnt a design to last for extended campaigns. This a mech solely for the cities or preferably near ammo dumps.
The H gauss do tremendous damage for very little heat but its ammo per ton is really pitiful. Rip out the medium pulse for another pair of ER mediums instead. This things need the ER meds more than the horribly short ranged medium pulse.
Decent for its intend job but not too good at it. Twin LB-20x could have done it alot better. Then maybe u can pull in an ERLarge as well. |
