(Or, how to get someone at an L1 game to wet themselves.)

Take the 3025 Commando. Strip off all of the missile systems and ammo:

SRM 6 = 3 tons; Ammo = 1 ton; SRM 4 = 2 tons; Ammo = 1 ton.

Subtotal: 7 tons

Insert PPC in place of the launchers. You now have a 3025 Commando that can take on medium mechs and stand a good chance of winning. The medium laser can either be kept as a close-range weapon or traded for something else.

Or, you could just trade out the SRM 4 for an LRM 5.

From laughter....

Then you no longer have a Commando. Every Commando--including the 2C--has at least one SRM6. Taking that weapon off the mech means it's no longer a Commando.

That's the point- no one's expecting it. It's like a Griffin varient that I once cooked up which involves an Arrow IV. You don't know it's different until it's too late.

As soon as you have LOS to it you can see it's got a PPC.

We play "open sheet" around here (meaning your mech sheet is viewable by every player upon request) once LOS is established to avoid situations like that.

BTW, putting a PPC on that chassis is fine, but it's not a Commando.

Call it something else and you've got an OK mech there.

If you change the main armament of a mech its not a variant is a new mech. You cant put SRMs on the arms of a Warhammer. Then it doesnt do the function it was meant to. Plus the chassis has to be screwed with too much for even a Large laser to a PPC.

Just for fun, I was toying with the notion of placing it where the laser was, meaning that some of the required power couplings will already be present. As it is, leaving the laser on was more of an afterthought than anything else.

FASA wasn`t always so picky on what was a variant and what became a new mech. Witness the fluff text in TRO3025, the CPLT-K2 Catapult. It`s quite official, appearing in the Record Sheets too. There were others, like the Javelin and Battlemaster.

Quote from TRO3025:Another version was created by House Kurita technicians, who modified the basic Holly chassis as well as armor placement. The weaponry has also been changed to make the 'Mech more of a close combat system. The Kurita variant has five more heat sinks, two PPC's, twin machine guns, and two medium lasers. Despite this, the Catapult's lack of hands makes it better at fire support than at close-range combat.

So even exchanging the main guns doesn`t really mean it`s not the same mech anymore.
This seems to be true AS LONG AS they keep
the general configuration of the design. The fluff for the Commando says they had tried mounting a Large Laser on the right arm, why
not a PPC? Swapping PPCs for LLs is quite common, as is swapping in an energy weapon instead of an AC.

I do agree that the enemy would notice it once the modified Commando is visible.
