==Overview:==
By mid-3066, after having invested a significant amount of time and money into
the development of OmniFighter technology, the Federated Suns found itself
with only the Dagger to show for its trouble. While the Dagger is not at all a
bad machine, not even its heavy armor can make it a match for heavier
OmniFighters like the Huscarl and Tatsu. Not surprisingly, Federated-Boeing
Interstellar was the first to present a heavy OmniFighter design.
The Federated-Boeing design team assigned to this project didn't waste time
deciding how heavy to make their fighter. The new OmniFighter, named Aurora,
began from the start at a full one-hundred tons. 25 meters long and 18 meters
from wingtip to wingtip, it also ended up being one of the largest aerospace
fighters ever built. The Aurora's appearance is strikingly similar to that of
a Twentieth century air-breathing fighter (the project head was a history
buff), down to the variable geometry wings, which are an uncommon feature on
modern fighters. The wings also make the Aurora annoyingly similar in
appearance to the Marik Shiva.
However, where the Shiva's variable geometry wings posed little problem, the
Aurora's wings caused a number of difficulties. Creating an effective way to
move the wings (and hold them straight in atmospheric flight) of such a
thickly armored machine was more expensive than anticipated - servos strong
enough to do the work had to be made from materials which were lighter (and
more expensive) than usual. Still, the expensive addition proved its worth
when it was realized that the fighter's huge wingspan could not fit into a
DropShip or WarShip fighter bay without being retracted.
==Capabilities:==
Unlike the other OmniFighters in the Inner Sphere, the Aurora is powered by a
standard fusion engine. This was done as a cost saving feature - a highly
effective one, as the Aurora costs just over 6.5 million c-bills - slightly
less than the Capellan Defiance OmniFighter, and nearly a quarter the cost of
the Lyran Eisensturm. Despite its standard engine, the Aurora dedicates fully
half of its tonnage to pod space. This number is made even more impressive by
the fact that the Aurora carries an unparallelled twenty-three tons of
ferro-aluminum armor.
The Aurora's primary configuration is meant for general space superiority,
with weapons of all types, covering all ranges. Each wing carries an ER PPC
for long range threats, as well as a pair of ER medium lasers for general use.
A rotary AC/5, large pulse laser, and Streak SRM 4 are all crammed into the
nose, providing most of the close firepower. A pair of ER medium lasers guards
the rear.
The A variant is based on the Dagger's B variant. The A carries two LB10-X and
one LB20-X autocannon; the hail of cluster munitions these weapons can fire is
almost sure to do some critical damage somewhere. Five forward facing ER
medium lasers augment the A's firepower, and provide a fallback in case of
ammunition depletion, while a sixth laser covers the rear.
The Aurora B is designed for long range engagement, with three Artemis-backed
LRM 20 launchers. A laser array similar to the A variant's provides extra
firepower and aft defense.
The C variant is designed for use when ammunition is scarce. The primary
firepower comes from a pair of PPCs on each wing, and is augmented by a number
of ER and pulse lasers. While the standard PPCs make this configuration
somewhat short ranged, they generate less heat then extended range weapons
would.
The Aurora D is designed for short-ranged combat, with five Streak SRM 6
launchers and the ammo to keep them going. A pair of ER PPCs keep it from
being out-ranged, and a few ER lasers augment its weapons and protect it from
the rear.
The Aurora E is an experimental configuration, mounting three rotary AC/5s and
a few lasers, all linked to a targeting computer. This configuration is
currently intended for anti-DropShip combat. A Guardian ECM suite is also
present, to guard against the Artemis equipped missile launchers often found
on DropShips.
==Deployment==
By odd coincidence, the first Auroras shipped from Galax on the same day
Katherine Steiner-Davion surrendered. The first squadron was originally
intended for the Davion Assault Guards, and they will be integrated into the
unit as the Assault Guards rebuild. Following fighters will be split between
front-line RCTs and WarShips.
